Could you explain why a SHA checksum would verify an original/functioning 3DS rom?

Also... I have an interesting question. How does the 3DS differentiate between a 3DS cartridge and a DS cartridge? Is it hardware or software? If it IS hardware or a combination of hardware and software, that would explain why the Sky3DS cannot emulate DS games as well.

I decided to update my V8.1.0-19U 3DS XL yesterday to the latest firmware of V.9.4.0-21. I only did it because I knew that cards have only supported 4.1-4.5 for the longest time, and I just figured I might as well go ahead and update so I could actually use the eShop for once. I was certain that support for V8.1.0-19U would never happen. Of course, right after I update it, I come across a news post saying that Gateway has created support for newer firmwares, and were set to start on V8.1.0-19U after. Just my fuckin' luck. So now I've got this V.9.4.0-21 3DS XL, and I guess my only option is to get a Sky3DS even though I wanted the Gateway for the longest time. Unless, of course, Gateway is going to have support for V.9.4.0-21 anywhere in the near future. What the fuck do I do? Just wait it out and see if Gateway is ever going to support this firmware? I am really not fuckin' happy. And yeah, it's all my fault. You don't have to tell me.

Stop misinterpreting the GW update. There has been no update on the compatibility, or a release of a firmware. All that was said was "If you are wondering what native support we will bring for lower than sysnand 9.0, we can tell that after 9.0-9.2 we will start with 8.0-8.1 and gradually work our way down with support for even lower sysnand firmware versions."

I see, so basically GW will update the compatibility not only 4 - 4.5, 9 - 9.2, but maybe also the older version IF we patient enough to wait for them :)

- Are you working on supporting 5.x and 6.x 3DS systems? Yes, we have still not given up hope to support these consoles. But please be patient."
Have they updated their faq since the 4.5 gateway came out?
Maybe I'm just being cynical.

Actually they just made another update on there site. So it does seem like they knew they could overcome any firmware but decided to sit on there butts until real competition arrived.

This logic does upset me since I've wanted a GW for my 3DS for some time, but was past the required firmware. If they simply announced another previous firmware I would have stopped updating sooner, but all's well for me now since I caught wind of their 9.2 support at just the right time. Talk about luck!

I looked up on the Sky3DS site. They said: Yes, Sky3DS card can play 3DS game online as a genuine gamepad did, can also save, load, edit etc....

Anyone know if Sky3DS will work for online/local multiplayer?

My luck as well, the weekend before Monday when they released 9.3...I had made 3 attempts to update to 9.2 on Saturday and finally on my 4th try I got it.

I don't get it, they could've raked the cash flow if they would've release the update per firmware. Could it be that there really is an exploit that GW is using that has not been found throughout the previous firmware releases, main question now is WHY RELEASE SUPPORT FOR PREVIOUS FIRMWARE? We're either on 4.5, 8.1 or 9.2. Majority of people need to be on 9.4 to go online so any previous firmware support would be useless. I'm not talking about 8.1 users (because these users got lucky with new purchases and are waiting for 8.x support), I'm talking about 6.x - 7.x. Its pointless!!!

Pointless how? Imagine giving your costumers the ability of utilizing Gateway without needing a gamecard. That's explosive!

Its pointless to support previous firmware because, by now, I'm sure everyone is either staying on 4.5, staying on 8.1 ( people who purchased 3ds xl). 9.0-9.2 ( lucky to purchase one with it, was able to update to 9.2 before 9.3 rollout ).

Why would anyone want to update from 4.5 to any firmware between 5.x - 7.x? Online play, eshopping requires 9.4. Play games without a card? cia support? They could get that from a support firmware, which should be 4.5 and 8.x and 9.x. Emunand? Done deal on that with 4.5,8.1 and 9.2.

one advantage is so they can do away with ranges......im sure they would love to be able to say just "9.2 or lower" rather than 4.1-4.5 or 9.0-9.2, but if your on 1.0-3.x or 5.x-6.x you can update using a retail card....see things would get a bit confusing for noobies then

Is it? Imagine let's say your mom or someone wants to gift you a brand new 3DS XL bundled with a GW card and spends their last bit of cash. You go on and open it and notice it's on 6.x. Fuck, well I guess you'll have to spend another $40 bucks on something you don't need. You keep forgetting GW is not Sky3ds and they're not looking into cashing a quick buck. When they said no additional hardware is required they meant it!

it's irrelevant in GW's case since you can still play online without being on the latest firmware
Please elaborate. I was just quoting this guy since he said "Majority of people need to be on 9.4 to go online".

Are you talking about the SysNAND or the EmuNAND?

emunand since you shouldn't use sysnand with GW.
to play online with games (be it emunand or sysnand) you only need to have a firmware that runs the game (obviously) and have all the updates the game requires (when there's any).
With GW, even if you're not on latest firmware (in order to access eShop), you can still install the game updates as cia and bypass eShop that way.
That's why I said there's no need to be on latest firmware in order to play online.

eventually there will be games that require 9.3+, it'll be kinda hard to play those games

eventually there will be games that require 9.3+, good luck playing those games sir

eventually Sky3DS will be blocked. Good lucky using it then sir.

and emunand solves that problem anyway. we just don't know if will exist yet or not in the new support but GW wouldn't leave it just like that so there will always be a solution.
