Picked up a Steins;Gate BluRay set from Funimation. Long story short, disc 2 and 4 play just fine, but 1 and 3 simply cause the drive to make a faint clicking sound and never load. The bottom of these discs seem to have some funky coating that looks like a magnetized CRT when held up to the light. All four discs work fine on my friend's BluRay player. Are these discs simply a format that the PS3 doesn't read?

And if it matters (which it probably does), I'm on Rogero 4.55.

Blu-ray is Blu-ray, there is no special format within, even Blu-ray 3D is an extension of Blu-ray (no special format and is backward compatible to Blu-ray player contrary to the packaging).

That said it is definitely possible one Blu-ray drive can read a disc but not another. Either the laser is failing or the disc is slightly damaged and other drive having a better luck.

Thanks for the insight. I suppose it could be the drive, even though it plays everything else perfectly.

Just to give an example of what I mean by "funky coating" I took this picture...

As you can see, the disc on the left reflects the light in an interesting, blotchy-looking way. The disc on the left looks just like an ordinary disc.
Disc on the left doesn't read (1 and 3), disc on the right reads (2 and 4).

That's actually pretty common among many Blu-ray discs. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I thought this might be the case, as they play fine on other BluRay players. Might it have anything to do with the fact that I'm running CFW?
