I tried blocking the updates since 5.0.0 came out. Blocking the url's on my router did nothing.

Anyway disabling auto-downloads and going into vWii and back into Wii U mode has stopped the updates being forced onto me.

This is pretty fuckingly obvious, on 360/PS3 you need to update to use the online services and the Wii U is no different.

Stick to one or the other and don't bitch.

Hey guys, first time poster, been lurking for a few days since I ordered my Wii U from Nintendo.

It showed up last night along with my copy of MK8, which was awesome fun for the hour or so i had to play last night.

I have some noob questions about homebrew, as it was always my plan to install the HBC so I can do some SNES/NES emulators (my wife loves the oldschool games)

So, forgive me, but please help :)

My Wii U came with 4.03 installed, but I had to bump it up to 4.1/4.7? I think to install MK8. So I did that, I haven't set up the wifi for the system yet, as i was reading that the update would automatically go to 5.1.1 if it was enable. So with it being still on 4.xx that means I can still install homebrew channel and all associated hb emulators and stuff. My plan was to go buy a 10 dollar used copy of LEGO batman, and an SD card and run the bathaxx instructions I've seen.

Now everyone has been talking about the "webkit" exploit that 5.1.1 stamps out. Is that the same thing as all of the homebrew installation methods (smash stack, indiana pwns, bathaxx, etc)

Essentially what I'm wondering is, if I were to install the homebrew channel using one of aforementioned methods, and then update my console to 5.1.1 (to use the online and stuff), would the HBC simply stop working? or would the homebrew apps not load? or what are the exact consequences?

Thanks so much in advance, and again pardon my noobness. Hopefully I can learn and come to be a contributing member of the forum.

Once again, this is nothing new, nor is it "sneaky of Nintendo" by any stretch of the imagination; the recent system updates have always been required to access online services, so people need to stop getting their panties in a twist and either deal with it by not updating and keeping their Wii U in a hackable position, or, update the firmware and get it over with. Really not that hard to decide. We can't have both....for now. If people don't like it, too freaking bad for them.

Right now it looks like ps3 scene's beginning.

Pretty much, but not as bad as the 3DS in terms of having serverely limited range of usable firmware for said exploits. 5.1.1 shouldn't be impossible to adapt the exploit to outright, and like the Wii, I'm sure there a way to circumvent the block, but it ain't gonna be easy.

Thanks Ryan, I read through both of those, and gained some valuable insight. I'm still slightly confused though, as I wasn't able to discern from the conversations if the browser exploit is what explicitly enables HBC on the wii mode of the Wii U (is this vWii and the wii mode on the wii u, the same thing?)

Another user posted that his system updated to 5.1.1 and all of his wii hbc was still functional. Is that right?

Sorry again, still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing.

hehe its ok your new ^_^ (Vwii) is wii mode on the wiiU. Currently we can't get full home-brew in (WiiU mode) the user was talking about the hbc for vwii (wii mode).. the webkit exploit is for establishing home-brew in WiiU mode (don't have WiiU mode home-brew yet) only the wii mode (Vwii has hombrew) Nintendo blocked the bug for home-brew in WiiU mode (the bug isn't full home-brew yet but a lead to getting it in wiiU mode) if you want home-brew in WiiU mode in the future avoid updating to 5.1.1 but if you only care abut Wii mode (Vwii) home-brew then update all you want ...Again if you want hombrew in WiiU mode then avoid updating. Webkit is for WiiU mode not wii mode (vwii) as for the hombrew channel in Wii mode everything is hackable in Wii mode (Vwii) by the way Vwii sands for virtual wii -that means a the wii inside the WiiU so Wii Mode

See that's what I thought, but you clarified it perfectly, thanks mate :)

I'll hold off on updating for now since I still have all the single player elements of MK8 to play through first, so online isn't a big concern.

I'll go ahead and set up the homebrew on vWii and play around with that :)

Thanks much for the help mate.

Vwii mode is not affected by the recent WiiU fw update, as Vwii is basically emulation within the WiiU. All available exploits and guides still work for the Vwii portion of things, so updating is not an issue. However, like its mentioned throughout this forum, if you want any kind of possible WiiU hack, do not update to the latest firmware. If you want online MP and E-shop, etc, for WiiU, then update, yet don't expect best of both worlds like some of the idiots in here moaning.

Forgive me, as I haven't kept up with the scene in quite awhile. Has there actually been a major development recently with this browser exploit, or are people just not wanting to update in hopes that something will come of it?

They are waiting , I'm on 5.0 now and had to disable the wifi to stop the updates , the router shit isn't and didn't work for me before.
Until the WiiU has at least 300 new games ( not rehashes ) I don't think we will see an exploit.
