So, I offer to do dsiware downgrades for local people in my area....

And today, I was just lazily searching through my email inbox, when a doozy of a letter landed in my mailbox.

It follows:
Good Afternoon astrangeone, I'm writing to let you know that I've reported your ad to both RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and BSA: https://reporting.bsa.org/r/report/add.aspx?ln=en-ca&src=ca Your ad (#1185950550) titled "3DS Downgrade and A9LH installation - Can do 11.2.XX firmware!" promotes illegal software downloads (which is highly illegal). This is not the only ad that has been reported. Your ad (#1211395079) titled "Nintendo 3DS Modding/Hacking - Any Firmware!" has also been reported. Software that "allows you to pirate games over your wifi" is highly illegal and you should know that! You should be contacted soon. I'm writing to you just to give you a heads up.

It's true, I have an advert up on Kijii offering to downgrade and install Luma3DS. That's all. No illegal software and certainly no pirated games.

I should have been more careful with my wording on my advert. Looks like the BSA is just for businesses, although.

Seriously, how screwed am I? I feel like the wording sounds like someone/a competitor creating a scare tactic. But I took down the adverts in question, and just looked over the rest of my adverts.

Update: Looks like the "BSA" is a real thing - Business Software Alliance. Think it really was a competitor. If the guy wanted me taken down, I would have been reported for selling A9LH'ed systems as well.

Update (Nov 22, 2016): I got contacted about my new galaxy style 3DS XL, and apparently it was the same guy who threatened me. What the hell? If you are interested talk to me about it, not threaten me...

That is fucked up.
a9lh isn't just for piracy. Region free, screenshots, save editing, and other things perfectly legal.

@xtheman166 -- Yep, you are preaching to the choir. Save editing is the most important thing for me. From the way the thing is worded? Probably a competitor hoping to take me out. I've reported smaller things to the local police and they never created a police report anyhow.

Only good thing is I had no name/no address on the advert.

I don't know about the copyright laws in Canada, but the DMCA law in the US allows hard-modding if you're only modding the hardware, not the firmware. And I've heard the DMCA law is very close to Canada's.

So, what you're doing might be considered illegal. But if we're being serious with ourselves, the police probably has more stuff to worry about than a guy just modifying a game console. And anyways, who else would, A: Have extensive knowledge about 3DS Hard-modding, & B,: care enough to report your ad to the authorities? It's definitely competition. What an absolute dick.

Sorry man, hope things look up for you.

@DeoNaught - not in a paper, just something online as well. It's like Craigslist for Canadians. Yeah, I took down the adverts and made sure the systems I had listed didn't have Freeshop in the title.
