I hate Kingdom Hearts

So like a week or so ago, I got a PS2. Ever since I've been addicted to Kingdom Hearts. I beat the first one in like 3 days. Same with the second. I liked the second WAY more. The new features were cool. I found it A LOT easier than the first though. The only battle I found hard was the last one against you know who. (Not gonna say the name. Spoilers)

But yeah, I hate the addictiveness of the games. I did literally nothing but play Kingdom Hearts since I got the PS2.

Really? Dying wasn't that easy in the first...

Until Sephiroth.... I never died so many times in my life.

Meh, maybe I just failed with my equipped abilities. I really don't know. Maybe I just completely suck.

I have always been a fan of the series, for a variety of reasons. The simplest of which is that I adore action/adventure-RPGs. It is hands down my favorite genre. Unfortunately the action/adventure-RPG genre isn't particularly large. Choices are limited.

The genre has all of the benefits of an RPG (stats, upgrades, equipment, heavy character development and a sweeping storyline) with none of the downfalls of, say, the turn-based format. To generalize, downfalls such as random encounters, and depending entirely on menu-based combat. I like to be in direct control of my actions.

As for Kingdom Hearts specifically, I have a dual fascination with it. Yes, the narrative can be a tad simplistic, but if you really look behind all of the talk of "hearts" and "darkness" what they are really discussing is the nature of good and evil. In the case of the oft used wording of "heart", that is really just the series term of for soul/spirit.

To delve into the traversing of worlds, they may refer to them as mere "worlds" and on the menu they may appears spherical planetoid formations, but that is just a simple GUI for what is actually inter-dimensional travel. Anyone who is a fan of scifi, or comics, is immediately at home with that concept.

Going back to my dual fascinations, which I mentioned two paragraphs up, I love the idea of the crossover. Square-Enix meets Disney. Its the stuff of bizarre fanfiction, the kind of thing we play as children. As a child if you have a Batman action figure and a Spider-Man action figure, eventually you're going to start playing with them in a scenario where they occupy a shared universe.

Its such a far fetched idea, and yet haven't we all dreamed about it at one point or another? Not necessarily the matchup of Disney and Square, but of any combination. The sad truth is that eventually we come to the realization that as utterly ridiculous and delightful as Terminator meets Transformers is, they're owned by different companies and will ultimately never be allowed to legally meet in all likeliness. These folks made a ridiculous combination happen for real, and that alone is worth the price of the game to me.

My second fascination is with Disney's dedication to the franchise. Namely in the lengths they go through to make the Disney worlds accurate and acquire the official voice actors for each character. I love seeing how the Disney worlds match up with the films they are based on. More than that, though, I get a real thrill from hearing the official Disney-sanctioned voice actors, be they the originals or the modern replacements, reprise their roles.

One standout for me would be Kathryn Beaumont. She played Ace in Alice In Wonderland (1951), and Wendy in Peter Pan (1953). She is 72 years old. After all these years, and presumably some vocal changes (which tend to accompany age), she was brought back by Disney to do these roles again and pulled them off wonderfully. How cool is that? All this time has passed and not only did they keep her in mind, but she was willing to come back to her breakout characters from 60 years ago.

I'm also a large fan of the inter-game continuity they have established. Even when the Kingdom Heart series is droning on a bit, I can't help but appreciate the sheer number of interconnections that Nomura crafted between each game. Most games don't do that, hell most films don't do that. Generally you don't see that level of detail outside of a 30-year canon like Star Wars (with all of its comics, video games, etc all contributing to the larger picture).

Those are my reasons for loving the series. Even when it gets a little bit tangled up in its sometimes over-simplified narrative, I can see the quality in overall big picture of the franchise.

What I said out load:

"HOLY SHIT, DUDE! WALL O' TEXT!

I did just read it however... and I noticed that it said: "... I mentioned two paragraphs up, I love the idea of the crossover.". However, two paragraphs up it never mentioned this, or anywhere above it for that matter... not a big deal, just kinda bothered me.

A bit off-topic, but if you re-read the statement "Going back to my dual fascinations, which I mentioned two paragraphs up," you will see that the "which I mentioned two paragraphs up" bit was in relation to the line that came before it, not after. In fact it doesn't make sense in that alternate context. :P

Hmm, reading from Ace's post. It buffles me to hear a voice actress to play the Disney character role after all these years. I wonder, what makes such dedication to come like that? A role into a game where the details of such calibur is overlook from the storyline and gameplay.

I guess this is when the magic becomes the solution to my quarry.

I guess this is why I'm American, lol.

I like Kingdom Hearts. To me, it's one of the last truly good Square Enix series. I even like the story. None of the games are perfect, but they're all good wholesome fun and they register on an emotional level for someone who grew up and adores classic Disney like myself.

People criticize the series for being milked. Yet i've enjoyed every one to some extent. And i feel that they did truly put a lot of effort and love into the games. Moreso than other games series that are milked and no one even complains about.

Ugh. Sorry but I literally hate the story and gameplay in the PS2, GBA, even the PSP. And I dunno why

I actually like the Kingdom Hearts series. I thought it was different, I liked the uniqueness of the worlds and the plot. Yeah it was kinda stupid at times, but at least it's different. It's better than half the crap Hollywood is coming out with in movies. Everyone has their opinion. Some like the games and some don't. Like I cannot stand Final Fantasy VII (waaaay too confusing...why the hell was I cross dressing in that game?!), but most gamers will disagree with me (FFIX and FFVI FTW!).

As for the Alice/Wendy thing, I didn't even THINK about that. Wow...

G
I thought it was brilliant. It had me looking for other games to play within the same genre. The story line was deep, and the graphics were good. I never saw any problems with it.

This topic confuses me..

It's like false advertising. You lure everyone in who hates kindgom hearts, and then you tell them you like it.

A great way to start a flame war, no?

Agree with you there! FF7 was WAAAY overrated. FF9 is my favourite!

I like KH because I prefer ARPGs to other so it was the gameplay that won me over.

Kingdom Hearts is so kawaii~ ne?
No.
I thought it was shit even though I manged to beat both of the PS2 games without dying of boredom.
KH2 is the most over rated crap I've ever seen.

Even though I add to it because I do like Roxas ☜(゚ヮ゚☜)

Every Final Fantasy game that isn't IV is awful. Just gonna say that. IV was the only one that actually had interesting characters, a decent storyline, and the gameplay was actually a change of pace from FFI-FFIII before it became overused. Although I wouldn't put FFIV as one of my favorite RPGs.
