Spirited away is the most overrated movie ever and it sucks.

tldr; fuck this movie it’s overrated and it’s lame and if you like it then let’s not be friends, ever.

Okay,

So I used to watch a shit-ton of anime when I was around 14/15 years old. I know that makes me kind of gay or whatever but fuck that, I just was just in it for the “plot”,
Catch my drift?

I watched only the cringey ones though, like High School DxD and Code Geass and stuff.
Whenever I talked about anime with someone who didn’t know much about it; they would always reference the Miyazaki films.

The Miyazaki films are basically anime movies that are directed by the same guy, so fancy that.

So I looked it up on rotten tomatoes to see what score they got and apparently his top rated movie was at 98%, and it was called “Spirited Away”.

With a rating like that, how can I resist?
I watched it.
I studied it.
I fucking hated it.

For starters, there’s no conflict.
Even in the shittiest anime I’ve ever seen there’s some basic level of drama or thrill, but in this movie, the most thrilling the movie gets is when the weird faceless guy kills some dude (for no fucking reason).
All the rest of the fucking movie is the least bit entertaining.

The movie is pretty artsy, sure, but none of it has any weight to it.
There’s dragons and monsters and shit but no actual symbolism or sign of any deeper meaning.

It’s like looking at a bunch of still life paintings.
They’re pretty, sure, but have no deeper meaning or reason to remember or think about them.

There’s no conflict, plot, or even that kind of “plot”, just artsy fartsy little pictures all lined up in a row.

The big fucking twist in the movie is when the ninja boy reveals that he’s some Jesus of some fucking lake or some shit that nobody fucking cares about, what a shock!
Also chehero (or whatever her fucking name is) returns to reality at the end and her parents are completely fine and have no memory of her little acid trip she was on the whole movie, give me a break.

In short, if you still like this movie despite all of this, let’s not be friends, ever.
We’ll go our separate ways, and you can watch all the shitty movies you want and I’ll keep watching my eechi anime.

And then, we can both be happy.

the sad thing is that its the best of all ghibli movies. ghibli movies back in the early 2000's were expensive and hard to find too, and they all suck

I think this movie have rich ideas, but it's too much absurd story to me. I felt like I watch alice in wonderland. I rather older Ghibli movies, but many scenes were briliant and touching. Good movie.

Just because its animated doesn't mean it should be held to a standard. Anime isnt a genre, it's a form of media. A popular form of media in japan because of economic, political, and government influence. I hate when people say they are into anime, it's like saying "I'm into live action". Its doesn't make sense. I dont compare the notebook to Terminator 2 because they're both western.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these movies are based on the culture in which they were made. Some references you just arent going to understand and some things you are going to miss completely just because you didn't grow up in japan. If you dont like that movie, that's fine. But dont act like a connoisseur of anime, cause no such thing exists. This isnt one of my favorite movies, but it's an achievement of japanese film under it's own merit.

" it's like saying "I'm into live action". Its doesn't make sense. "
It makes complete sense unless you're an idiot. A style is definitely something you can prefer or not. I don't like black and white movies. That's not actually a genre, it's literally just an entire time period of movies. People can dislike anime based on the style alone, just like people can dislike live-action because of the style. You can also very easily hold standards within those specific styles for various criteria. The idea you also somehow have to meet arbitrary criteria to judge something is actually so stupid I couldn't begin to know where to start explaining how misguided and wrong you are.

When someone says "I like anime" only an absolute retard would not understand, or be mad, that someone is stating generally that they typically enjoy media in the style of Japanese animation. I personally enjoy romance drama anime, but you sure as fuck won't catch me watching live-action drama romance.

It's also kinda sad that Spirited Away is so terrible you had to try sneak in the back door just to give it some sort of credit.

The problem is saying "I like anime" is extremely generalized. You don't like all anime. No one does. Might as well be saying something like "I like movies" or "I like cartoons." Sure you do, but there are going to be plenty that you don't like as well. It's not a genre or even a style, it's just a means of conveying a story.

The blog reads like something a kid posts when they’re upsetted by some insignificant minor thing. But, I’ve still never found a Ghibli movie that could hold my attention.
