Spirited away is the most overrated movie ever and it sucks.

tldr; fuck this movie it’s overrated and it’s lame and if you like it then let’s not be friends, ever.

Okay,

So I used to watch a shit-ton of anime when I was around 14/15 years old. I know that makes me kind of gay or whatever but fuck that, I just was just in it for the “plot”,
Catch my drift?

I watched only the cringey ones though, like High School DxD and Code Geass and stuff.
Whenever I talked about anime with someone who didn’t know much about it; they would always reference the Miyazaki films.

The Miyazaki films are basically anime movies that are directed by the same guy, so fancy that.

So I looked it up on rotten tomatoes to see what score they got and apparently his top rated movie was at 98%, and it was called “Spirited Away”.

With a rating like that, how can I resist?
I watched it.
I studied it.
I fucking hated it.

For starters, there’s no conflict.
Even in the shittiest anime I’ve ever seen there’s some basic level of drama or thrill, but in this movie, the most thrilling the movie gets is when the weird faceless guy kills some dude (for no fucking reason).
All the rest of the fucking movie is the least bit entertaining.

The movie is pretty artsy, sure, but none of it has any weight to it.
There’s dragons and monsters and shit but no actual symbolism or sign of any deeper meaning.

It’s like looking at a bunch of still life paintings.
They’re pretty, sure, but have no deeper meaning or reason to remember or think about them.

There’s no conflict, plot, or even that kind of “plot”, just artsy fartsy little pictures all lined up in a row.

The big fucking twist in the movie is when the ninja boy reveals that he’s some Jesus of some fucking lake or some shit that nobody fucking cares about, what a shock!
Also chehero (or whatever her fucking name is) returns to reality at the end and her parents are completely fine and have no memory of her little acid trip she was on the whole movie, give me a break.

In short, if you still like this movie despite all of this, let’s not be friends, ever.
We’ll go our separate ways, and you can watch all the shitty movies you want and I’ll keep watching my eechi anime.

And then, we can both be happy.

No deeper meaning? Well, I saw it for myself. Every person in this movie acts out of their own desires. There is no "good" or "bad", maybe that's the problem?

And conflict? Of course there is. Chihiro is struggling with herself the most. The movie isn't bad by all means - it just wasn't for you. Don't be angry my friend. :-)

The fact that you dislike people who like this movie is kind of sad. The movie is more or less like Alice in Wonderland... The conflict is that the girl needs to find a way back home and return her parents to safety. And the concept of river spirits falls short for you because it is of cultural significance. Chill out and stop hating things that others like.. Maybe you'll learn to appreciate the effort and the artistic value of Miyazaki's films.

I think it's a great movie me and my family really like it If me liking this movie means we can't be friends I'm completely fine with that

All I got from this is that anime is only rule 34. Have you watched Akira? Or Cowboy Bebop? Samurai Champloo? Fullmetal Alchemist?

The thing is, from the initial paragraph, it sounds like all you watched were the late 2000's-early 2010's cringe festival; Future Diary (which I just chose randomly recently and facepalmed when I got to the end, knowing it was another not-End-of-Evangelion-Akira-wannabe knockoff when it comes to its ending), High School of the Dead (where's the rest of the show? What, did the zombies die off after 2010/2011 when The Walking Dead kept it going and will apparently finally come to an epic conclusion two years from now?), and other shit (Code Geass is cringey? I haven't seen it, wasn't it getting a new season or something?) in that era.

The thing I find interesting though is that a lot of the things that people thought were "cringeworthy" back then seem to be more of the "I remember it being better when I was younger" effect than anything like...well, this:

Or this:

What the fudge; why is the first goddamn thing I see some crazy old wrinkly woman with a forehead pimple or stone or whatever?

Why would you do that, Paolo? You weirded the bejeezus out of me before I even read a single word! Not cool, guy, not cool.

I don't know why I said Code Geass was cringy, it's actually a sick show imo. It's basically a better version of death note (plus the main character has an amazing voice in the dub). Also no, Code Geass isn't getting a new season (thank god- that would have ruined it). On the other hand, High School DxD is very cringy, some of the humor is enjoyable but theres boobs everywhere.

I haven't watched any anime in a long ass time, despite having a giant collection of 1080p dual audio series on my hard drive (that I downloaded out of boredom). I'm glad too. Some people watch soo much anime in so little time that none of the shows have any weight to them anymore. Probably one of the reasons I liked Code Geass so much was because I gave it time to digest, and watched it over the course of 3 months instead of 3 days.

I don't really have much perspective though, since I'm in the exact target demographic for those kind of shows. Chances are by the time I turn 20 I will probably not watch anime at all, let alone enjoy it. That is, of course, assuming I don't become a weeaboo reddit simp that's dependent on that stuff.

I like this Movie,it was my first "real" Anime Movie I have watched.
(Considering "Wickie, the Viking/Maja,the Bee/Pinocchio and that Kind from my Childhood in the early 70´s were already also Animes).:)

Ik I'm late and this comment is kinda irrelevant-
but uh if you mean "plot" as in hentai not all of us are into that. Anime has a shitty reputation cuz of guys like you. Just sayin'-

news flash. not all anime involves excessive violence, underage girls with huge cleavage and panty flashes!
