A Maniacal Dance of Tales and an Ocean of Stars rant thingy.

As a Star Ocean fan I'm less... disappointed and more indifferent about SO5. Each game in the series has been worse than the last from about star ocean 2 (though you could argue that the SNES version of 1 was the pinnacle of the series).

As a Tales of Fanatic though, it's like both SO's and Tales' studios were liek: "Hey, wanna make a bet for who can make the worse game? ;D " not that the two are related other than having the same origin.

Here's the thing though.
Both Zesty and this have terrible AI.
Both have limited variety in combat and force one specific way to fight.
Both have an insignificant "Rock paper scissor" style that waters down to one type being far more useful than the others.
Both have chests that you can't unlock til "later".
And both have a story as deep as a bag of salted chips.

SO5 certainly wins in the most frustrating category, because not only will the AI take hits to the face like Zesty, but you're expected to protect one of your characters (the one who just HAPPENS to have low defense and HP) multiple times in the story. Oh, and all the enemies will aim for that character by default so unless you grind a bunch or stand in the way of their attacks you'll see often see a game over screen in seconds and have to go through the game's unskippable cut scenes all over again as your characters waddle along like they're zombies for a couple minutes while all Zesty had was an over-reliance on it's fusion gimmick on harder difficulties if you didn't like insta-dying.

Neither AI knows how to heal or revive properly, in SO5 you need to specifically switch to a character to make it do more than tie it's shoelaces in battle. And even if you opt for it, item use is clunky and inconsistent as your character can take between a second or a few to finally decide to throw that blueberry at a character that was begging for their life while our great item thrower decided to randomly ponder about the existential nature of throwing a blueberry to recover ally health.

I guess some amusement can be attained by spamming the same skill over and over because that's what SO5 devolves into quicker than the AI's willingness to run into enemy attacks like it's a stranger giving out free candy, at least if you lack any form of attention span (like everyone who regrets wasting their money on No Man's Sky after realizing how obviously bland it is).

Both of these games feel like they're parallel universe versions of themselves though and it's quite eerie.

I'd rant more but eh, whatever.
I'll be getting the japanese ps4 version of Tales of Berseria next week

Chrono trigger was a sci fi fantasy game, Time tavel, time paradoxes, technology, past present future and beyond. Is a mix of various things. It mostly sci fi with fantasy elements.

But i guess i didn't explain myself well, while not ideal and absolute, the common use of fantasy would be something more of a disney movie type them, having kingdom with kings, queens, prince, princesses, knights, royal order, dungeons, defeating monsters vast weaponry, magic spells, important key items, saving the kingdom or world in most cases, happy end the heroes maybe sometimes get married or whatever. Is just more of like that. Just as the plot of FFIV or Chrono trigger.

The term fantasy doesn't exactly mean all the stuff i just said, is just a common thing people most likely associate it with. Is true fantasy can be anything and everything based on reality but set in a more imaginative twisted way, for more original ideas and appeal.

But then Final fantasy VII (I will attempt to tell what can remember) Is about a complex plot involving characters that clearly had close relationship and affilation before the events of the game even begin, that is not clearly understood. With the people working for the shin-ra organiation who apperently find out they were up to no good, form a rebel group called avalance, and after something goes wrong they get seperated, find a girl who has some connetion to ancient race and explaining the story about the time they investigated a library at nebilhime (whatever is called) And find information about some jenova, and decides to presue it and the things called materia which is made of some earth life energy.... i don't remember much right now. All i know it goes from one thing small like rebel groups trying to take out the other, and then a man is on the loose trying to take over the world as it is his destiny. (Again if i am wrong i have not played it long time)

There no castles, no knights, or classes for characters, there is hardly any romance, no important item like crystals (Not that it has to be crystals) Not that i am saying this all has to be part of the game. But now and days final fantasy games is less like that and more of technial aspect as you already mentioned before. Is just what i was observing as the game series continues.

I'd have thought Chrono Trigger was a fantasy game with sci fi elements, but that works too.

But I guess I'm failing at explaining myself as well. But that is the nature of humanity ^O^
I think the conversation has devolved into semantics though. So I'll make my points brief and to the point now.

-My point of bringing up the meaning with fantasy is that it still befits the series' title. Regardless of what they want to do with the series.
-If you take the plot of additional FF7 stuff like the other games and movie then they contradict the orignal. Retconned.
-I have no objection to your observations on the series.

BONUS:
Crazy kid who thinks he's someone else joins a terrorist group called AVALANCH who want to blow up the Mako reactors because it's draining the planet's life blood.
Girl who that someone else was dating is actually an important ancient who can stop the alien Jenova.
Sephiroth steals his mommy's head years after going insane because he wants to go about destroying planets like his mommy did.
You and your group travel the world in attempt to hunt him down because he has an important crystal (okay, it's just crystalized mako :/ but eh), known as black materia, that can summon meteor that only ancient girl can stop with her white materia's Holy.
She gets killed because Sephiroth wanted to be link from "Adventure of Link".
Then a bunch of other stuff happens something something Crazy kid get flashback therapy with implied romantic interest and then your party full of crazy kid, pixel chest love interest, and your merry band of bland party members goes off to fight the momma's boy.

@Cyan did you finally beat the vagrant story
Yes I did.
I used cheatcode (infinite HP) to be able to progress and not die in a single hit against simple monsters....
There's no experiences or level, so you can't become stronger or more resistant by killing monsters, you only win random buff after each boss (usually +3HP >_>)
even with infinite HP, the game was still long, I didn't want to be extra strong with infinite magic, etc., only not die in one hit.
last boss was extremely long (due to him always evading when approaching)

The story wasn't very good (good but short), lot of backtracking to unlock doors everywhere in the town to finally end the game in the town's center.
After the game, I tried new game+ without cheats, and I was indeed stronger and it was at last pleasant to play ! I wanted to play the game without cheating this time.
But I only could go up to the same place where I had to use cheatcode to progress more :(
even newgame+ was impossible without cheats, so I stopped here. (almost 4 months playing the same game, due to my "one game at a time per handheld/console" resolution haha)

While playing Vagrant story on handheld (usually 30min a day, during my job's lunch break), I completed on consoles :
Transistor, Never alone, Ratchet & Clank (PS4), gravity rush (PS4), Star Ocean 4 * (PS3), Mass effect 1 * (PS3)
* I was almost at the end but didn't play them since 2010...

since then, I decided to play:
Handlheld : Kingdom heart PSP, and I'm still playing it.
Console : Beyond eyes (bad), Oxenfree (great!). I completed oxenfree two days ago. I didn't pick the next game yet. (I'm busy moving to a new place right now). I have few choices : PS4 : Tearaway, Heavy rain, Uncharted 4. PS2: finaly complete Star Ocean3 (very hard), PS3 : mass effect2.

Yup, i knew you would be using a cheat code, that game is hard, so perhaps you ready to start rogue galaxy? you might find that game a better experience. :D

I would like to complete SO3 before starting another PS2 game. that's just me trying to stop starting hundred games and completing nothing :P
I have too many PS2 game I started and never completed, but I will have to start them again as I forgot most of them. better start rogue galaxy then. (I have an undub DVD5 rip, too bad PS4 classic didn't add japanese audio)
oh, I also want to play Dragon quest 8, but 100H is too long. I found little games are more fun (as I can play more of them ahah)

I think it be better to play the 3DS dragon quest 8 since you can play it anywhere, it wouldn't be easy to be consdierirng you had a hard time with vagrant story. :P

I think that game is much harder and longer, i didn't finish it, and when my dad said he played it he had to been over level 80 to beat the final boss with all 4 characters. Some people are able to do it with least 40 or something but that would take longer since the battle isn't easy, you probably be stuck fighting those bosses as long as the FFVII weapons thing with over millions of HP or that one boss in FFX peneace with over millions of HP that takes over a hour to beat. O_O

Is a square enix game so you should expect to have your patience and fustration challenged :P
