3D Taking Over?

Do you think this 3D "Fad", "Phase", or "Phenomenon" will take over in a few years?

Rewind six years ago: To the launch of the Nintendo DS. I remember thinking about the touch screen a few months before its launch. I realized that I never used a touch screen before. I also remember thinking that maybe it would have some bugs at first, or would not always function properly. Now touch screens are literally everywhere and are even on devices that are considered obsolete.

Now the Nintendo 3DS is coming out, and the majority of people have not even seen one of these "3D screens without glasses" in action. Is it possible that six years down the road from now that nearly every device has one of these 3D screens? I'm not talking about with televisions too, because that switch would take much longer to occur (Multiple TVs in households, and with each TV costing a ridiculous amount of money). I am just referring to handhelds. People upgrade handheld devices (Like cell phones) more often than they would upgrade the TVs and stuff and their houses. And if the screen is built-in, everything is done for the consumer already.

Also, I didn't mention my opinion on this. Too be honest, I don't really see it as exciting. Actually, I am not even looking forward to the Nintendo 3DS for the 3D features. I find 3D to be "cool" I guess, but I never really had a preference of whether to watch a movie in 2D or 3D. I just wanted to write about how I can easily see how 2D screens can become extinct in the future.

Seems to be taking over. Which is annoying. I never bought into the whole gimmick, it's more or less just a waste of time.
The only '3D' videogames I want are virtual reality.

I think it is. I read a lot of people on this forum saying how much they don't care about 3d...but I'm one who's definitely excited about the prospect of 3D taking over everything. ^_^

I really like 3D!

3D itself a gimmick? It make action and horror movies like 10X better. I'm glad it taking over! :P

It can never take over, because there's one flaw with the whole thing:

some people's eyes, can't handle 3D. By that I mean they could be partially blind, blind in one eye, or have some other disorder. It'll never be able to take over like the DVD took over the home movie scene.

As for my opinion on 3D. I hate it. I wear glasses, just to sharpen my vision. I don't HAVE to have them on, but for driving or if I'm watching TV, I prefer to have them on so everything is clear. I went to the movies and I seen Avatar, Saw 3D... and some other movie I forget, and I also seen Toy Story 3. I've tried, during different times in each movie, 3D glasses with my glasses on and off. My glasses off, it didn't even look like anything was popping out. My glasses on, same thing, didn't look like anything.

I find it to be an expensive, over hyped gimmick that people will eventually say "wow, 3D sucks." Because just like gaming on an iPhone with the touch screen, no matter how much it's worked on, it'll never be 100% perfect where everybody can watch it.

3D = Waste of time and money.

3D doesn't = Waste of time and money just because you can't unfortunately see it and I'm sorry you can't. :(

3D doesn't need to be used by everyone to take over...

I agree that not everyone will have everything in 3D the same way everyone has DVDs. But I think that eventually everything will have that option of having 3D on them. I think that the majority of electronic buyers can see 3D well, so it's a big enough market to push for it. I think 3D is our future.

And perhaps you should ask your optometrist about your problem on your next visit? There may be a solution for you since I don't think you're blind at all.

I'm the same way with how I wear glasses to sharpen my vision, but I don't have to have them on...yet I can see 3D just fine.

Woah, it will be in our future, but hell it won't be it.

You don't think that eventually all screens will have 3D? If you can't see 3D, then they'll just see 2D whether the 3D's turned on or not. It's because of that reason I believe 3D is our future.

(I could be wrong...this just what I believe will happen. I'm not iron fisting saying that there's no way it's not going to be this.)

Well they are making 3D cell phones without glasses over in japan so I think 3D is here to stay. Heck they even have prototype holographic tv's and want them to hopefully be consumer ready and on the market by 2020. So you might even have a star trek holodeck in 30 to 40 years considering they have prototype holograms you can feel using ultrasonic wave emitters and believe it or not using Wii remotes for the hand tracking of said device...

Horror movies suck regardless...
Action movies don't need to have random shit 'fly at you' to be better.
It's just a waste of time.

I don't care if it's taking over or not, as long as I get the option to turn it on and off

3D killed resident evil for me, one of the worst game/action/zombie movie..almost as bad as house of the dead

I respect you opinion. Just wondering can you see 3D?

I personally don't think 3D is only great when "random shit 'fly at you.'" I enjoy even simply watching people talk to each other in 3D. 3D's an enhancer.

Before you know it, we'll be living our lives in 3D. What a maddening day that will be.

Ala Super Paper Mario?

Also, I don't have a problem with my eyes... the glasses fixed them. 3D just doesn't do anything. There's also the problem where people who do see it just fine, some of them have to stop because 3D will make them motion sick I think it is..

I won't deny that 3D is in our future, but the question is "Is 3D taking over?" In which case, no it can't take over. It'll be implemented, sure, but will it be able to take over just like DVD did with VHS and be our new standard? Absolutely not. Mainly because there are tons of people who don't like it, and people who don't want it. It's also not that great like DVD had with it's chapter skip instead of the regular fastforward.

tl;dr : 3D won't take over at all. It'll be used and brought to us, but not everybody will switch to it like people did with the HD-DVD to the Blu-Ray.
