i recently got this cartridge with a bunch of bootleg pokemon games. I haven't modded my 3ds at all so if I were to update it will nintendo brick it? this may sound dumb but i'm just super worried

Flashcarts get recorded as standard DS game – nothing more, nothing less.
The only "risk" I see here is the suboptimal precision used for manufacturing them: Sometimes a DS won't detect an R4 (or they might be harder to insert/remove).

Updating is not a problem – though installing custom firmware is a bit easier on older firmware versions (not requiring Seedminer based methods).

Good luck and have fun!
