yeah i think this might be the way to go at this point. i know you already set it all up on the vm, maybe it will be easier doing it over again on windows? silver lining? no?

here are some details on how i had mine set up:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/install-win10

i need to go to bed i'm fried

The WUBI Installer, install Ubuntu to a Drive Letter of your choice.
No partition is required.
WUBI Installer make a Boot Menu for Windows 10 and Ubuntu.
You must UEFI switch off for correct installation and running for Ubuntu.

Good night.. :-)

hum.. have you UEFI Bios on?
Check the Bios Setup, then go to Boot, Security = off or from UEFI Bios to Other OS.

OR:

Go to into BIOS, Boot Menu, then start the WUBI...

First, try to boot from Boot Menu in the Bios setup.
Hold [DEL] key by reset and go to BOOT option or you have a Bootmenu in the Bios setup.
Or by RESET press and hold the F8 key for Boot Menu.

If this not help, press option (3) for repair the windows.

Apparently I have UEFI and not BIOS

Change to "OTHER OS", or switch the Security MODE = off , in the Boot option (This is in the BIOS!)

I think I don't have this bios, I have it (here I'm on the security tab) :

View attachment 106345

I see, you have a older PC.
Forget that with the UEFI.

Go with F8 (hold by RESET PC) into Boot Menu.
When you have no Boot menu with F8,
press the key DEL by RESET PC and go to the Boot option.
Select as first the WUBI.. as boot sequence.

If you see no WUBI, uninstall WUBI in Windows 8 and install it new.
