Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced for PS5, will be timed console exclusive

Sometimes, rumors get it right, as proven by this year's earlier rumor that Aspyr Media was working on a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Originally released by BioWare in 2004, KotOR, the remake of the incredibly popular classic title will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5, at least, for a short while. For those worried about a PC port, it'll have a simultaneous release with the PS5 version. Aspyr will be in charge of the ground-up remake, having plenty of prior experience porting games to various platforms over the past 20 years, including having ported the original Knights of the Old Republic to macOS back in the day.

AUSTIN, TexasSept. 9, 2021 — Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) have announced Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ - Remake, a new remake of the original revered Star Wars™ story and blockbuster role-playing game experienced by millions of fans around the world. In development as a PlayStation®5 (PS5™) console exclusive at launch and for PC, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is completely rebuilt from the ground up for a new generation of players to experience this legendary tale as never before. The news was revealed today in a teaser trailer during the ‘PlayStation Showcase 2021’ featuring the iconic imagery of Darth Revan and the voice-over talent of Jennifer Hale, who played Bastila Shan in the original game.

“We’ve spent the past several years assembling the very best talent from across the industry to deliver a modern vision of this timeless Star Wars legend,” said Aspyr co-founder Ted Staloch. “As lifelong Star Wars fans with extensive experience working with many of its best games, we have the deepest love and admiration for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and cannot wait to share this amazing remake with the rest of the galaxy.”

Development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is led by a newly created team composed of industry veterans at developer and publisher Aspyr, working in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games have worked together in recent years to bring multiple classic Star Wars titles to modern platforms, including the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game will be published on PS5 by SIE, while the PC version of the game will be published by Aspyr.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out among the Legends of Star Wars storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be joining with Aspyr and Sony to remake this Legend for a new generation of players,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “Our teams have been working closely and share a deep commitment to honoring what fans love about the original, while bringing new fans on this incredible journey.”

“Nearly 20 years after its debut, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains one of the most highly requested remakes from the PlayStation community,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Head of Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The time is finally right to bring this dream to life for both diehard fans and those who have yet to experience it.”

First released in 2003, the award-winning Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still stands today as a landmark achievement, frequently ranked among the greatest video games of all time. A pinnacle of Star Wars Legends storytelling, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set around 4,000 years before the events of the original trilogy, introducing a new cast of heroes and villains in an epic struggle for the fate of the galaxy. The game is beloved by fans and has been praised by critics for its deeply engaging narrative, memorable characters, sense of immersion and discovery, and choice-based gameplay.

Too bad the person in charge of rewriting the story is on record saying The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie and that she's not a fan of Kotor.

This worries me greatly as that basically means no care will be put into it.

Feels like a move directly ordered by Kathleen Kennedy herself, wouldn't be surprising considering just how hands on LucasFilm is with lore, story, and whatnot on outsourced projects. =[

I thought I was edgy by comparing this to FFVII:R but you kids are upset because some dork is working on it?

Also what is this last jedi slander, that movie was great. Though if we’re being honest, Rogue One was the most KOTOR of the film series.

Being re-written by a manhating legbeard.

Didn't bother with the first one back in the day because of its lackluster combat but this one is a hard skip.

Weird, I just recently saw someone retweet her saying how happy she is that she gets to work on one of her favourite games.

If you read the thread in the link I posted, she also said it wasn't her favourite game. If you look into what type of person when they say "I m happy to be working on this product" They mean "I m happy that i have this product to insert my activist beliefs into it"

So i hear neither EA or BioWare are involved in this, is it true? If so, this might have a chance after all.

I hope PC also means Macs as well as Windows

dont get me wrong my Intel Mac only has a gtx1070 and my M1 is just that (any day on M1 eGPU support Apple ;) ;) )
and my gaming/rendering PC has a 3090 so I will probably play on that even before my PS5
but out of principle and nostalgia asypr was a OG Mac Dev before the branched out to PC and mobile and they released Mac ports of KOTOR and KOTOR2 so the remake would feel morally right.

Who cares? Also, she said KoToR wasn't her favourite, not that she isn't a fan.

She might actually do a good job for all we know. I've been browsing Twitter and it's really sad that people aren't giving her a chance because she's vocal about social justice or whatever

Besides there isn't (or shouldn't be) much story writing to a literal remake.

If this was the first beloved video game, TV show or movie, i wouldn't be this feel of no hope.

Plus these companies seem to hire people with no qualifications under their belt to handle these big beloved IPs and when it fails they blame the audiences.

She work for a feminist news blog that's it
