Hahaha yeah, there is an element of exploration, unlocking towns which then unlocks new scenes and goods, but for the most part, it's the relationship which determines your progress, (and having enough money to bribe people for information with!)
There might be more of a chance to develop a friendship in the second game considering that you can travel with two companions, but don't quote me on that(!)
Do let us know what you think if you give it a go though! I think there is a nice amount of random events and investment oppertunities that mean you don't feel like the game is giving you the same, linear experience every time you play it
