Has anyone though of making an homebrew app that lets you use your DS as a radio? I think it would be kinda neat. Listening to mp3s kinda gets boring, and listening to DJs talk sometimes is entertaining. I know the DS has an antenna (that black wire inside the DS), so would it be possible? Would be cool if someone actually did it.

I believe it would not be possible with stock Ds hardware: there is nothing to decode radio, if you had one of those modified passme's Natrium42 was using a while back something could happen.

Although at this point in life two things need to be pointed out: radio around here consists of generic boy band 45, sorry 46 (they are so easy to get confused), the latest crack dealer turned hip hop "superstar" and what is known as R&B. OK so AM radio/digital radio is a bit better but no-one does AM/digital decoders like they do FM ones.

The fact you can find yourself with a FM radio barely bigger than a DS card (I have seen credit card sized ones too) for what it might cost to buy lunch does not help either.

However, there was a streaming app released a little while ago (search one of the homebrew sites) that you might wish to have a look at and I predict at some point there will be a third party radio device (hell if the GBC had a remote control third party addition).

Well there is some kind of homebrew app for the Nintendo DS that lets you listen to a webradio. It only has one webradio though, but the creator is working on that

Yeah I know how bad the radio is now, but where I live, and I'm assuming in many other locations to, they play oldies and such. I like listening to those stations since they play stuff from like that 70s, and 80s, you know the Eagles, Steely Dan (not sure if I spelt that right lol) and some bands around their period too. And yeah there are radios that are so small already, but when you stick a cell phone, a radio, a ds lite, and a digicam into your pockets, thats bit overwhelming. Would it possible just with standard flash equipment (passm, flash cart, and the memory card)? I think I'd like to learn how to make homebrew just to see if I can could it. I know I'd enjoy listening to muh oldies station, maybe some others would too, maybe even those talk shows people listen to. Just a side question, where would be a good place to start if I'd like to get into homebrew development? Thanks.

My experience of US radio was a fairly positive one (90% of radio stations around here stick shows up on their websites after the fact if you care to try, they tend to favour realplayer so search for "real alternative" if you do want to listen).

I normally carry a bag so junk is no problem (not to mention portable ones come with neckstraps), as I already said though a DS with conventional hardware would probably not be able to do it.

If you are interested in DS homebrew there are many guides and things to look at:
http://scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5227 is a good place to start.
You will eventually want to go to places like
http://www.bottledlight.com/ds/index.php/Main/HomePage
http://www.drunkencoders.com/index.php?sys...&page=Tutorials

And the general piece of advice given to those who want to start on DS coding: have a look at GBA stuff first, almost all of it carries over and there are hundreds of tools,libraries,example/O.S. software,guides... and above all some damn fine emulators.

http://www.gbadev.org/ (also good for DS stuff)

http://www.pineight.com/gba/
http://www.work.de/nocash/gbatek.htm (here is a newer version that deals with DS stuff: http://nocash.emubase.de/gbatek.htm )

Heh thanks Fast6191. I guess it might be worth a shot. I don't listen to my cds much cause I enjoy listening to the DJs do their trivias and contests. I don't have much interest in internet radio, since that would require a hot spot. Thanks again.

Isn't the antenna just for wi fi? Or is it just a little wire attached to the circuit board to be used however you want?
