Could it mean that they might not have the means to simply unscrew it? Or am I missing something here.

Yeah it's more about the mystery of those cartridges being something undiscovered at the time or just the demos we already have/had hahah

yeah true, would have been cool to see what it was like and why they weren't able to open it

at the same time, 1997 demo was available online since 2018, so "prototype" cartridges found on auction sites in 2021 can very easily just be bootlegs made from the downloaded rom
