Oslo: Bomb blast near Norway prime minister's office

A massive bomb blast has hit government buildings in the Norwegian capital Oslo, killing at least two people and injuring 15 others.

PM Jens Stoltenberg described the situation as "very serious".

The bomb was followed by a shooting incident near Oslo at a youth meeting of the Labour Party, which Mr Stoltenberg leads.

Unconfirmed reports said a man dressed as a police officer had opened fire indiscriminately, injuring five.

No group has said they carried out the attacks.

Hours after the bomb struck Oslo, officials said some people were still inside the damaged buildings, some of which were on fire.

Television footage from the government quarter showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets - smoke was rising from some buildings where fires were burning. The wreckage of at least one car was on one street.

All roads into the city centre have been closed, said national broadcaster NRK, and security officials evacuated people from the area, fearing another blast.

Personally, I'm a bit shocked something like this would happen again in Scandinavia, more so Oslo. Although a bombing has happened recently in Sweden (a failed one), this one is of particular big magnitude.

The incident at Utøya, a small island, also in Norway, where a fake police officer started killing people who were attending at a youth camp, is related to this. The 1.90 male blonde norwegian shot people with a handgun and a scoped rifle. Survivors hid or swam for their lives. The man has now been taken into custody. No motives are known so far.

20-30 people may have been killed at Utøya.

This is a terrible thing to happen in what I thought was a safe country.

The suspect arrested in today's bombing and shooting attacks in Oslo is 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik, who is believed to have links to right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant (read: anti-Muslim) organizations. (source: Sky News). And now, he has a Wikipedia page. The Daily Mail has photos. Here's what's said to be his Facebook page, and a Twitter account. Looks like they were both created within the past week, which is all very suspicious. According to comments attributed to him on various right-wing/anti-immigrant websites, he was a fan of white supremacist and anti-Muslim pundits including some from the US. Assuming it's legit, all of this makes early reports that Muslims were responsible for the attacks laughable. [/p]

Shootings occurred about 2 hours after the bombing. Sounds like he planted the bomb, tooled up and headed to the labour party youth camp on the island, where he was able to enter the camp dressed as a police officer by saying he was there to keep them safe after the bombing. May have called as many kids as possible over and then started shooting. As he went around the island, he was able to get kids to come out of hiding with his uniform, they'd run towards him thinking the police had come to save them and he'd kill them. The island is pretty small and there's not really any escape. There were reports of him shooting kids in the water as they tried to swim away and more may have died from drowning or hypothermia. Absolutely horrific, pure evil. Looks like most victims were 14-16, targetted for no other reason than their political affiliation.

Thing I'm most surprised about is that he didn't shoot himself. Don't know if he just wants to keep spouting off about his motivations or what, but usually spree killers and Mumbai-style extremists won't allow themselves to be taken alive.

If his Facebook page is gone, there's probably screenshots about. When I looked he had no friends and a public profile. His wall was full of trance music he posted and commented on on the 17th. His profile said he directed his own company, described him as Christian and conservative and listed lots of interests including Dexter, WoW and MW2 (expect that airport scene to be brought up again)

Their parents politics at that. 14-16 year olds may have ideas about politics but they really have no political affiliation. I wouldn't even say 18 year olds do. No matter how mature or clever you are at those sort of ages your still a kid. Tragic, bloody horribly tragic and futile.

But I've got to say BlueStar, all the news I've seen about this only mentioned it might be Al-Qaeda related with the first reports, and even in them made it sound much more likely it was from some domestic(? I think that's the right choice of word) source. And as soon as the news about the shootings came in pretty much dropped the Muslim extremist angle straight away. Don't judge all news outlets by Fox "News".

Breivik posted messages on a Norwegian website expressing his admiration for the English Defence League.
Among rants about Islam and Communism is the following (roughly translated from Norwegian):

This is horrible, I wont say anything about that. But here in Finland the media is freaking out "omg it was terrorist attack etc". Also, I noticed how its rather weird that Finland hasnt really had any bomb attacks/terrorism yet, but every country around Finland has. Not sure about Estonia, could be that they havent had anything also. But this also shows that Scandinavia isnt really expecting terrorist attacks or anything else for that matter.

My condolences go out to everybody who was affected in this attack. It's quite a shocker that this happened in such a peaceful country.
