I think, We should wait for one of us to get the DS so we can actually see instead of guessing.
But, IMO I think the Cyclo would work as well, just would need a firmware update. and if you really want to keep using your flashcard, Keep your current DS, No one is forcing you to buy one.

I reckon many will work, just depending on creating the program(Operating System for carts) that will hack past the start screen, my only concern is now the DS is more like the Wii type of menu will there be Firmware updates etc. etc. for the DS? That could cause a bit more hardwork on the hacking side of things.

The Cyclo and DSTT may work, since they are recognized as a normal cart. Heck, maybe even the DS-X can work, since it too doesn't skip the boot screen.

However, if this is true, goodbye R4 and others.

I love it how some killer news pops up and even though it's day one and nobody even held a DSi in their hands already there's a thread asking if flashcart support will be broken by the new DS just for kicks.

Ya want my opinion? Unless Nintendo devised special code to check the cart that is running before actually running it I doubt flashcarts won't work. In other words I believe there's an 80% chance that all existing slot-1 flashcarts will work out of the box. If not well tough luck, one more reason not to get that crap.

All flashcards wont work. I think Nintendo are pretty smart not to fall for the same mistake twice. I dont think that flashcards are gonna be able to work on it. The only way may be with some sort of mod-chip like the Wiikey. If flashcards work on it the only way it will is by some sort of new "SUPER" Firmware that the designers of each flashcard releases. Yet this is still kind of not possible since there are 2 touch screens now so ...... :S But maybe, just maybe, it may become somat like the PSP as in changing and downloading alternate firmware and stuff like that. Either way, i guess its worth buying, since now you can have an SD slot thus you have music, now we can finally kiss moonshell goodbye WOOHOO.

my thoughts exactly! The new DS will have different firmware meaning our firmware skipping flashcarts will not work

The news release I read didn't mention anything about two touch screens, I think that was just a rumor (that turned out to be false).

The only new features I saw were slightly bigger screens (0.25" bigger), SD slot and camera. It's also a bit thinner, has a larger stylus and less battery life.

Since the flashcards are signed like real games Nintendo can't just block all of them without blocking real games. They'll have to block the Flashcards by their individual Game-ID/Name. So I guess the most popular cards will be blocked and need new revisions with new Game-IDs/Names to work again,, but some small Flashkards will be under Nintendos radar and continue working...

My theory as stated in IRC last night:
QUOTE said:
(chuckstudios) there will be a whitelist built into the flash memory for all existing games
(chuckstudios) something like MD5, which could hold about 3000 games in under 50KB
(chuckstudios) all games from now on will be digitally signed in such a way that the DSi recognizes but the old DS models ignore
(chuckstudios) effectively killing piracy and homebrew

There is no signing on DS games, just encryption which IIRC is based on Blowfish.

Hmm. I was kinda looking at a Cyclo or the like, and...well, the possibility of it and others being blocked isn't a good thing.

But then again...the lack of a GBA slot is rather crushing too. I probably won't get the system anyway. =P

Signing - encrypting, tomato - tomato. and they are RSA-encryptet if I remember correctly...

No. Card encryption is definitely based on Blowfish, I just looked it up in gbatek. The encryption was somewhat flawed, however, and the header was unencrypted. This allowed PassMes to execute code, and the encryption was then able to be reverse engineered. Signing is bulletproof provided Nintendo's private key is never leaked.

Edit: And provided they don't use strcmp()

Edit 2: Also, Blowfish is symmetric key. Digital signatures are asymmetric (public-key crypto).

New DS, haha not suprisingly though

Fact 1
they recently hunted down some sites that dumped roms, and made the shut down the site

Fact 2
The now bring us a new DS, most probably with way bether security and Hardware that makes using flashcarts even harder

Fact 3
They get hacked anyway, why bother?

Xylez (along with at least 50% of the meme-spewing interwebs) needs to learn the difference between a general statement and a fact.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.

@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)

@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
