Reading in any language will slow you down. It really depends on how fluent you are. You can also get by games just skimming through the text.

Yeah...but on games like FF7 and such, I go through them faster when they are in english because I understand it better. In Japanese, I sit there and try to figure exactly what the hell the guy/girl is trying to say...and it takes a while lol.

Good luck, Some of my friends are learning Japanese, it seems incredably hard. German is the best secondary language to learn!
