Hacking Mass Effect 2 save freeze

I'm having a problem with my RGH xbox360. I've played mass effect 2 for over 10 hours now with no problems. now suddenly its crashing/freezing whenever it tries to save. I'm playing off an external hdd via usb, with FSD. ive never had any problems with other games, I just reached the point on the game when it asks me to insert disc 2, but it load fine automatically, and I've not had any problems with other multi-disc games (even 40disc LA Noire). I have also noticed that its not asking me which save device I want to use, but all my saves are there without me choosing the external hdd option, which is where my gamesave files are. Anyone have any ideas?

Load the other disc manually via FSD.
If that doesn't work, copy the game to the internal disc.
If that doesn't work, try ripping it as GOD (or Xex)

You know that you can upgrade the internal HDD to a 2TB one.
SATA is faster then USB and there's less chance of corruption when you constandly mess around with your external.
