I've been out of the Wii scene for a while. In order to add the lovefilm channel does the WII need a Nintendo update or is there another way

What do you mean by another way? like through a wad manager?

IIRC through a wad manager one can install the updated shop channel without updating through the official method. one can download the wii shop wad from modmii

what concerns you about updating your wii? in terms of homebrew and the like since it is affected by official updates.

It's his best bet probably ...going though eshop channel would require a update anyways...

Get the wad and go with it (or update the eshop channel installing a updated wad, then enter the eshop so you can download the intended channel as you normally would)
