Lakka Switch (L4T) update introduces new cores and QoL improvements

logonav.png

After a period of hiatus, Lakka's L4T-based Switch port has been updated once more with some brand new goodies for everyone to enjoy!

Four additional cores are now available, specifically Mame 2010, OpenLara, Genesis Plus GX (previously removed due to technical issues) and, last but not least, Play! PS2 emulator. About the last one, while having a PS2 emulator running on a Switch is very, very interesting even in itself, you shouldn't expect it to run your favourite games flawlessly or at full speed just yet as it's still slow and experimental. Talking about more stable stuff, a good number of other cores have also been updated, with mupen64plus-next sporting better game compatibility thanks to a recent rebase, Dolphin and PPSSPP getting more options (and improved compatibility for the latter, plus the default audio driver has been changed to avoid freezes while running it), PRBoom adding support for John Romero's Sigil and miscellaneous fixes for PCSX-ReARMed. RetroArch has received a general update as well.

But it doesn't stop there! A couple of quality of life features have also been thrown into the mix, as Lakka L4T is now able to shut down the system without going back to RCM and the battery charges more quickly - both of which can be handy if you like to carry your Switch around.

Here is the full official changelog, quoted from the official thread:
Core updates:
  • New core: Play! PS2 emulator (experimental, quite slow for now)
  • New core: mame2010
  • New core: Genesis Plus GX; the core is back and now default for Sega consoles
  • New core: openlara, an open source Tomb Raider engine
  • mupen64plus-next: the core has been rebased against latest GLideN64, fixing compatiblity with the few games that were still broken (including Yoshi's Island 64)
  • Dolphin: the core has been updated with new core options (BBOX, texture cache accuracy)
  • PPSSPP: the core has been updated with a new core option, IO Timing, as well as an improved games compatibility
  • PCSX-ReARMed: the core has been updated
  • FBAlpha has been renamed FBNeo
  • Reicast has been renamed Flycast
  • PRBoom: the core has been updated and now supports sigil.wad
System:
  • There is now a Shutdown menu entry to properly shutdown the console from Lakka without the need to go back to RCM
  • RetroArch has been updated
  • The default audio driver is now alsathread - that fixes PPSSPP hard freezing when opening the menu / closing content
  • The Switch now charges faster in Lakka

A download link can be found in the sources below. You can find a guide on how to install Lakka L4T on your Switch here, while you should follow these instructions to update it. It's recommended to delete the old config before booting (located at microSD:\lakka\storage\.config\retroarch\retroarch.cfg) or you may run into issues.

It's a good idea but will be more practical when/if they add sleep mode. Once it dies or you power it off you have to send the payload again to get it back to Lakka.

It is worth investing in a 512GB SD card, prices are now quite reasonble. It is the best thing I did.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-200G...card&qid=1564370998&s=electronics&sr=1-3&th=1

The fuck is up with the prices? It's all cheap, but then it shoots up to triple digits for the 512 GB!

Play! (did the inspiration for the name come from the old Bleem! from back in the late 90's?) sounds interesting, but considering the state of the main emulator itself, something tells me it ain't gonna be in the realm of possibility for the Switch. Would love to be proven wrong though, as the PS2 still has some games or versions of games that probably aren't going to be making it to the system in any official capacity.

I would like give Lakka a try, but before I would like to be sure how Lakka uses NAND.
Does it writes anything to the NAND, or does it keep it clean with no temp garbage?
Can the dev answer me please?
Thanks

Play! PS2 emulator
no fucking way is this ever going to work properly there is no way in hell the switch would ever be powerful enough to run this properly
well they say a machine has to be 10x more powerful to emulate stuff (not sure if true)
and switch is roughly 10x more powerful than ps2 (CPU wise)

Natehax said the Play! Core running through the terminal(by the looks of the video) in l4t ubuntu was getting 60fps in menu for kingdom hearts and up to 50fps in gameplay maximum overclocking cpu/gpu, so I wouldn’t say impossible considering how early things still are. However running the core in actual lakka seems to be broken at the moment(nothing runs past a black screen). Possibly some tweaking the options might help, but with a fresh install and default settings, no such luck. Possibly it is not getting the required ram to run games.

Sure is... and poor devs get hit with the charge backs

Most these crack sites have dead links anymore or the crack don't even work
  • linuxares @ linuxares:
@The Real Jdbye What don't you get? If someone use a stolen creditcard. Then sell said key on G2A. If I the dev sold the game key, I will get the charge back cost. That's how it works, it doesn't matter if I generate 300 keys if 300 of them are bought with stolen credit cards. I never said it was on Steam, but its the dev that gets hit. There is a ton of stories out there if you google it.
