But remember, only really old Wii's can play DVDs. Most Wiis now won't be able to. (Hardware limitation, so no homebrew will ever change this)

how so? aren't wii games in dvd format?
They are indeed on DVD-compatible discs, but the standard DVD playback feature was blocked on later systems to fight piracy. The Wii can distinguish between disc types based on whether or not the disc is pressed or burned, on the basis of BCA region information and other characteristic features. Any Wii with a D3-2 or newer drive chip will not play DVD discs at all.

Here's a convenient checking utility to see if your Wii is compatible.

All you need to know about the Gamecube is that it uses miniDVD, except without implementing the industry standard to avoid paying any royalties. All you need to know about the Wii is that it uses DVD, except without implementing the industry standard to avoid paying any royalties. All you need to know about the Wii U is that it uses BluRay, except without implementing the industry standard to avoid paying any royalties.

...seeing a pattern here? :P

And so all you need to know about the PS3 is that it uses Blu-Ray, except without implementing the industry standard to avoid paying royalties?

Sony was one of the inventors of BluRay, they created the industry standard.

Hell, the PS3 has the BluRay logo embedded onto the system, right alongside the DVD logo and the logos of many other industry standard solutions that Sony's not poortendo enough not to pay royalties for. :tpi:

To be fair though, you gotta sympathize with them - were they to actually pay the royalties, they would be putting money directly into Sony's wallet as Sony is one of the companies that invented DVD and BluRay. :P

Playback features are only "there" because the drives natively support them, Nintendo doesn't "make" optical disc drives, they just utilize what's available on the market.

but " without implementing the industry standard to avoid paying any royalties" you get a cheap "mini" Anti-Piracy right?

lo, so where is the instructions to do this?
Hack your Wii. Install Homebrew Channel. Then launch WiiMC from Homebrew Channel.

Like others have said, you can only play DVD if you have early batch. Newer Wii revisions removed DVD playback capabilities on hardware level, so there is nothing you can do about it.

@Others
Wii was never meant to play DVD from the start. It doesn't have digital audio out (optical or coaxial), one requirement for a device to pass DVD certification.

Wii game disc is based on DVD, but custom speced by Panasonic. Since it is not a real DVD there is no royalties payment to multiple companies, just Panasonic.

@Psionic Roshambo, The Wii U gamepads are tied to the console's region, so its impossible to find a cheap gamepad that supports your model.

@Xdqwerty I like how the game had the middle ages 1000AD, the dark ages 600AD.It was great seeing the post robot apocalypse 2300 like Terminator and enter the matrix. some of mad max and fallout. 2300ad though it could had used more elements instead of just a generic ai uprising. It was a great idea for their judgement day to be 1999 Y2K.

-great additions if they would have made an expansion or dlc in my opinion would be finding out humans trapped in a matrix -

a follower having a cyborg character living tissue over metal endoskelleton like terminator, and the synths from fallout

4After Zeal fell it would have been good to see more ancient eras. Perhaps Sumeria based in one area, then Egypt based in another area, Greek based in another area, then roman based in another area before the middle ages.---------

----between 1000ad and 1999 is a big gap they should have had the age of revolution like the american and French Revolution

then the cowboyy era in one area of map and the Industrial revolution/age of enlightmentthen a ww1 and ww2 and a cold war era
