so your r4 should be from r4i-sdhc.com i assume?
then it should be supported by ysmenu
download the ysmenu latest kernel update http://filetrip.net/file.php?id=33466 (taken from the thread i linked above)
extract and find the R4i-SDHC Ysmenu folder
you should find the instruction on how to dual boot ysmenu in a .txt file there

And is there a way to only boot to ysmenu?

i did tried the r4.dat from the reddit thread with ysmenu files on my r4 (from r4i-sdhc) and it works, boot straight into ysmenu
so assuming your r4 is the same as mine, it will work

At one point PC game pads where poorly supported, loading a game had setup, it was complicated. Now it's almost as easy as a console.
