It might be power? If it is an active adapter, it's likely it can't pull enough power without an external supply.

That converts VGA to HDMI, not HDMI to VGA. It seems you bought the wrong type of adapter.

Worked quite well with a 1280x720 VGA projector.
Note that you might need to set the Switch to Full Range RGB when using one of these adapters; otherwise, the image might be washed out.
