The game will run without it, but bad things happen: your animals get stressed at festivals.
I'm not the first persion to notice this, but it may get forgotten as this game has failed to take the world by storm.
You can AP patch the game using "DS Scene ROM Tool v1.0" found at filetrip.
Somebody should update the compatibility spreadsheet which doesn't say anything about a need for AP patching. I'd do it myself, but I am not signing up with those google sheissters just to fix an old game.
