It's not that you need a wireless internet connection, it's that you need a wireless network that has internet access, which is possible (and common) if you have cable, dsl, etc.

If you're willing to spend $50+ for a dongle, you'd be better off just buying a wireless router to plug your net connection into. This way you don't have to have all your traffic going through your computer, which at any point could be running slow, frozen, turned off, etc (especially if it's an old Windows 98 computer). Having a wireless router would also mean you're already prepared for any other wireless devices you might buy in the future (laptop, PSP, Wii , etc).

I don't know about G6 compatibility though. All I can tell you is that I have an M3 and it works perfectly so far.

If you get Nintendo's adapter, it's cheaper than buying a standard 802.11 b/g router, and cheaper than the one's posted above, but it doesn't work with Windows 98.

You can also find other standard wireless usb adapters for about the same price as Nintendo's:

But it's doubtful that any work with Windows 98.
