GBA games on DSi XL in 2022

So... I was wondering how do they run? Is the compatibility list up to date?
Also I guess there's no more updates for gbarunner2?
How is your experience with it?
Or should I buy some flashcard that support GBA games better? Is there something like that?

Flashcards are worse for GBA than CFW, since the DSi has no GBA cartridge slot so it can't do actual GBA carts/flashcarts. (and GBARunner2 runs better from DSi CFW than a DS flashcard)

GBARunner2 is pretty good, especially from CFW, though not perfect. The compatibility list is more or less up to date (just make sure you're looking at the DSi/3DS list, not the flashcard one).

See https://dsi.cfw.guide for how to get it installed, install Unlaunch or use Flipnote Lenny for best results as Memory Pit isn't compatible with the best verisons of GBARunner2.

Unlaunch, only real reason to use anything else is if you're super paranoid about bricking

Installing Unlaunch has occasionally bricked consoles, but it's extremely rare, and your console is much safer against bricking afterwards

Golden Sun 2 should work in this version I think: https://github.com/therealteamplayer/GBARunner2/releases/tag/v20210911-merges-and-tweaks

iirc that's the version included in TWiLight Menu++, but I could be misremembering

Games that I played on GBARunner2 (Nintendo DSi XL):

* Mario Kart Super Circuit:
- Fine. Everything works.

* Super Mario World:
- Almost fine. The game refuses to save in certain areas (the forest part). Moving to another section to save the game works. Other than that, everything worked.

* Shining Soul:
- Database says the game is fine, but I claim otherwise. On the Otherworld Forest there is a section that the map loads all scrambled and you can only pass to the next area by relying on the luck that the portal will open on a visible area.

It's fairly accurate/up-to-date as far as I know, the updates after that were mostly relating to feature branches like DSP. The forks don't do much for compatibility either, the fix in therealteamplayer's fork was specifically for Golden Sun 2, and maybe a couple others I dunno
Though it is planned to move the existing compatibility lists to Google Sheets, at some point
