Hacking Fire emblem on 4.5 - can I download DLC?

I just got my 3DSxL(4.4) with Fire Emblem, I updated it to 4.5 so I could play the game. I'm planning to get a Gateway so here is my question: Can I buy Fire Emblem DLC while remaining on 4.5 or is this not possible without updating?

Edit: Can I use spotpass on 4.5?

Something just hit me, my friend has a 3DS. Can I buy DLC or get spotpass items while using his 3DS? If not, what happens when I save the game with DLC on it and try to play it on my 4.5 system again?

DLC saves to the SD card, ot the game cart.

DLC is saved on the SD card and id definitely system specific. You won't be able to just copy it between systems.

DLC content is tied to the 3DS it is bought on.

You can download the Spotpass DLC (missions, items, etc)
