ds phat screen is kinda like original sp screen, the backlight is so much worse than the sp's front light was though. at least on mine. if you turn off the light then it's visually very similar to original sp and plays quite well in sunlight, or under a lamp

it's actually pretty nostalgic that way tbh, the look and feel of the non-backlit lcd, for playing gbc and gba games

Backlight old DS worse than frontlight GBA SP 001? Are you sure?
Then GBA 101(backlight) screen is better than old DS screen.

the pictures here showcase this pretty well

viewing angles are pretty bad and colors get distorted, and stuff can be difficult to see sometimes if you're not looking at it perfectly straight on

ironically shining a light at the screen in addition to the backlight improves picture quality when viewing at an angle

on the sp, because the light shines from the front, it doesnt matter what angle you look at it, the colors and clarity stays the same (as long as you dont look from above, because the light shines from below)

ds phat uses a kind of lcd that was more like the older gameboys (grey screen when off, the pixels themselves aren't lighting up, instead a separate light is being shone through the back) compared to the ds lite and newer systems (black screen when off, the pixels themselves are lighting up, and turning off the back light turns off the screen entirely)

I guess the older kind of lcd wasnt really made to be backlit, so image quality isnt that great when you do it
