Hi'yall,

Is it possible to somehow create an application that allows you to send a whole ROM via download and play to another Nintendo? Sure it'd take some time to download, but anyhow; Is it?

It would be neat if you e.g. had a friend over, and he didn't own a flashcart or something.

If he doesn't have a flashcard where would the rom be stored?
There's not enough space on the DS memory

Probably not, since normal download play demos and such are stored in the DS's ram, which probably couldn't hold even the smallest rom. Unless the program could take advantage of the browser ram pack, then you could maybe load a small rom.

How large is the DS' ram then?

Maybe I could split the ROM or something

I wouldn't see the point in it, even if it were possible...
You spend hours downloading a game on your DS and you couldn't play it after your friend leaves, and once you close your DS it is gone until your friend comes back.

Well it wouldn't work for 2 reasons...

1) Not enough space
2) ROMs don't have the official secure header thats attached to official download play demos, so unflashed DS's will reject it

how bout sending a game to your friend and he can save it to his flash card. would that work?

I doubt it. In any case, the speed is going to be so slow that we'll give up.

Even the slowest wlan isn't THAT slow, but anyway, a special homebrew software for this would be required (after all, mobile phones copy files by IR, bluetooth, wlan...).

Actually, the DS's wireless card can only run at 1-2Mb per second, and at least .5Mb of the bandwidth are used for maintaining the connection, considering it takes roughly 20-40 seconds just to download a song for download play in Taiko no Tatsujin, I would estimate sending a whole ROM would take roughly 10-20 minutes, assuming there was somewhere your friend could store it, considering that the average DS ROM is about 32-128 MB.

EDIT: I did some math, it would take 17.07 minutes to load a 128MB ROM, and about 4.27 minutes to load a 32MB ROM over the DS's wireless connection.

DS' WLAN sucks in speed. The only positive (but important!) point about it is that it's not draining the battery that much.

However - in theory it SHOULD be possible but only IF the game is designed for it which no game actually is. It's impossible to hack a game like that - WLAN is too slow for it. If you don't believe me check a simple DS Download play game - they need minutes to start where the DS cards need parts of seconds.
