I just built a rig for myself, been about 5 months, scrapped parts from my old computer till i can get the rest. decided to stress test it to see if it could maybe handle OC for shtz and giggles. slightly long description after specs.

my specs
Operating System
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

CPU
AMD fx 8320 8core 3.50GHZ

MOBO
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P
GPU

AMD Radeon r7 240 (scrapped part)

RAM
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (scrapped part)

PSU
Atnec's TruePower Classic Series TP-750c-750W

ok, so here is what i did, for 40 min i ran prime95. it maxed all cores to 100% load, and started up the fans in the comp. so after the first 3 min it went from normal usage temp of 23c to 50c, then slightly escalated to 55 over the next 17min. so i decided to see how a game would run during max load, so i rev up DBZXV knowing that it doesn't require all that much from either cpu or gpu. game ran smooth up till i have 4 characters on screen, hit with a tad lag but nothing to cry over. played fine for 10min. decided to really test it. I rev up ARK survival. after the horrendous load time for the game it starts up, i run around for about another 8 min or so, shift graphics from med to high, which of course makes frame rate drop and then almost immediately shift back down to med, then a few steps in game later my comp just shuts off completely. temp was maxed at 58C bounced between 55-57 during play.
I don't think it was quite an overheat issue for the CPU, but i do think that i may be the GPU got overheated/loaded or PSU is faulty in some way and/or couldn't handle all the extra usage.

Really hard to judge the reason behind the crash, I'd recommend checking the windows logs for potential leads.
My guess would be an unstable OC.

i hadent even OC'd it yet, was testing to see how hot it would get before hand. now ever since on every other startup it has one or two cores on max load for an hr or so. did a scan with avg, avast and malware bytes to see if it was a virus but nothing showed up in scans. and the crash didnt create a log it just full shut off like I had held the power button.

Really sounds like an OC related issue. Have you checked your event logs for critical errors at the time of crash?

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

that is the only error log at the time of the shutdown. in later logs i have a HAL error, so looks like a bios update is needed.

ok first of all what you did was a stress of the pc system ,your temps monitor are not correct cause to turn of it means temps went to the point that the system is set to protect itself for burning .if you wish to test more use a greater cooler

yea, you are correct. i was testing the cpu at its capped limit to see if OC was needed or possible with its stock, before i get a new cooler. is there a temp monitor that you would recommend? I use Core Temp for that purpose.

HWinfo mostly but as you have amd you must know that there is some problems with some programs that makes them to not show temps correctly

The temps don't seem to be all that high though for a protection shutdown however, did you add any harddrives or similar recently that may be putting your PSU at its limit?

i just added an extra hdd a month ago, 2.5 250GB Hitachi. and that is the drive I save all of my games onto as well. you think that because ark survival was on the drive when i was stress testing while playing that did something?

Did the crash only happen once, or is it a recurring issue? And if it is recurring, exactly steps lead up to each crash?

If it's only a first time crash, you may be overreacting to try and determine the cause of the crash. Try playing Arc Survival again and see if it crashes again.
