A Week ago i purchased a PS3 on a Garage Sale, its just the console and the HDD, I got at my house the extras, PS3 controller, which works fine, HDMI and Power Cord.

Once hooked up, the next message appeared:
safmode_ps3_1.jpg

I plugged in the controller with the USB cable and Nothing, once the PS button is pressed, the 4 lights start blinking and nothing else, i decided to take it apart, and everything was kinda OK, i mean, there was no dust no nothing.

I removed the HDD and plugged it on my PC and there was a windows install on it, i formatted the HDD to fat 32 and tried again.

Same error, and cant pass from that screen.

Tried another 2 HDD and nothing happen, if i remove the HDD i get the message that there is no storage unit or something like that.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 controller work, as i was able to plug it on my PC and recognize it and automatically installed the driver and played a few games.

I also tried to reset it via the small button on the back of the controller.

So.. the system appears to be on Spanish, booting it up normally with just 1 press on the power button, gives that exact message but on Spanish, trying to enter to recovery mode, gives the message on the attachment below.

both are the same message, just different languages.

So... i cant use this ystem as it is stuck on this screen, tried google, youtube and forums for solution but eveyrbody talks about the reset hole on the controller which i tried, there are a few cases like mine without solution, but ill try my luck here and see what people can offer.

Tried so far:
  • Changed the HDD
  • Formatted the HDD to FAT32
  • Connecting the Controller using a USB cable [Multiple USB cables, 5 of them to be sure, and yes they do support data transfer, not just charge]
  • Opened the PS3 and cleaned it Up
  • Entering Recovery Mode
Any suggestions would be gladly accepted!

Try another PS3 controller i have 3 PS3 controllers and on 2 of them the PS button no longer works but every other button is fine. Also a friend of mine has had the exact same issue with one of his controllers so that could be the same problem you are having.

Will try today another controller, but im 100% sure that this controller does work, as it was my main controller on the old ps3, and when i press the PS button, the controller does turn on, but the light start blinking and it wont synchronize.

My toughts are that the USB ports are Dead, or maybe Nand Error?

Try plugging in the controller, hitting the PS button, and holding in the reset button for a few seconds.

Tried this already, also holding the reset buttons 30, 50, and 10 seconds.

The controller does seems to reset, what it appears it does not, it SYNC with the new system. ill try to read the MAC Adress of the controller before and after hitting the reset button to see if it pairs with something.

Stating this its very simple, the fun on this its finding whats wrong with it, perhaps are just a BAD usb port, or perhaps the whole motherboard, however it does enter to recovery mode and normal mode, even reset video mode, just that the controller does not sync with the system.

Check the USB ports, they're either super dirty and just make bad contact, or they don't work. If they don't work at all, you could try replacing them which is super easy, if you have basic soldering skills.

I had thought of the MAC address as well since I remember having had to change it to connect via BT to PC.

Y cleaned them when i purchased it, and they dont seem dirty, ill try to read if they send at least voltage conencting a cellphone to them, and see if they charge, if they do charge, i dont know how to check if they send data lol.

Yeah changing the mac is easy, sadly this can only tell me if the controller its trying to pair or not, since it cant connect.

I know this is like 8 months late but I just had a similar issue and what worked for me was the following:

1. Unplug PS3 and remove the hard drive
2. Plug in and turn on PS3 on without hard drive
3. You will get a black screen or error message. Ignore this and put hard drive back in WHILE PS3 is turned on.
4. Restart PS3

Sorry If this isn't useful for you and I wasted your time but I had to share it because it worked for me and might help.

Easy fix: use a thick charging usb cable (for data), and an official PS3 controller.

I encountered this countless times while at work, the solution is always chunky usb cables that carry data and charging, not just charging.
