AYANEO announces new lines of handheld gaming PC

In a press conference streamed today, AYANEO, the manufacturers of the first AMD-based handheld gaming PC, announced that it is expanding its line of devices. It previously teased the AYANEO AIR which will bear an OLED screen, a compact form factor and a more affordable price point targeted mostly for light and indie PC gaming.

In addition to the AYANEO AIR, the company also revealed two unannounced lines of devices: the AYANEO Slide and the AYANEO 2. The AYANEO Slide packs an integrated keyboard under the sliding screen akin the GPD Win 3. The AYANEO 2 will be an AMD 6800U-based device and will feature a bezel-less screen. Like the AIR and NEXT series, these two additions look like they will also integrate handgrips in the hardware design.

With these new additions, AYANEO now has 4 lines of handheld gaming PCs which the company categorises as Entry Level (AYANEO AIR), Flagship Level (AYANEO, AYANEO 2 and Slide Series) and Top Level (AYANEO NEXT). These categories also represent different price ranges but the specifics have not been revealed at this time. This include launch window and specs. However, the press conference aired did include actual models of the some of the announced devices, so we might hear more soon.

In addition to the hardware, AYANEO also announced that a version of its device's launcher, AYA Space Lite, will become available for other devices as well.

With more lines of handheld gaming PCs at different price ranges, it offers a promising outlook for gamers looking to get such a device of their own. And with more competitors like Valve and recently Anbernic entering the market, it seems like we won't be lacking when it comes to options.

Specs. Says right in the OP:

I don't blame AYA for this, it's not like they're in a position to take a loss on the hardware like Valve is, but it does make their devices less appealing for people who are primarily looking to play AAA games on the go.
I think it's good to contrast/complement something like the Deck here, if you just want your indies and emulation with minimal compromise, there's a lot to be said for a lighter device.

Neo 2 feels like it's gunning for Deck though, suddenly these companies leaving behind Switch design for the big grips and sticks. Hopefully they can bring the performance as well.

I'm sticking with the Steam Deck since I already invested in one, and I want Valve's steam client to be front and center. I also just prefer a system that ships with Arch+KDE out of the box since that's my #1 preferred setup wherever I can get away with it. Lastly, I want Valve to know I'm interested in it.

I could just buy the highest-spec'd AYANEO tablet and flash SteamOS on it but whether or not the driver support would be good is hit or miss. It looks like it's using AMD for the GPU + CPU which has historically had very good support with Linux. Deck also has the better controllers for the kind of games I play. Say what you want about the face buttons and D-Pad being in the very corner, I want my hands on those clicky touchpads.

$600? Holy crap.

If I want to play PS3, I'd just plug n' play the console. They're so cheap these days.
You can get a used PS3 for like only 60 dollars here where I live, lol. There was a fat model PS3 on ebay for like 20 last I checked.

Getting a Deck for under 400 dollars might be enough to play all PS3 games emulated at 50 fps at least, but that CPU in the SoC might be a bottleneck according to the RPCS3 Discord.

I doubt many people will be able to reasonably afford or even want to buy the Mainline and Slide ones now that the steam deck is a thing going forward unless you're a hobbyist or have money to the point where you can throw it around, but the Air could really have a good niche if it's around the same price tag, boasts equal or at least similar hardware and can be bought in places the deck cannot. I like the idea of the Slide one as the whole no keyboard thing on the deck is kinda of a bummer as i owned a gpd win in the past but i am not in a position to pay 1000$+ anymore and won't be for a long time, i'm already pushing my limit a bit with my 512GB Deck reservation!

Actually the deck is available only in a handful of countries (and this will not change, if Valve keeps their tradition), it is not an option for majority of people. Those competitors, specially the Chinese ones, do sell their stuff anywhere. Also there will be no waiting line either (most likely).

That's what i meant by "bought in places the deck cannot". Apologies if i wasn't clear enough. i have friends who want the deck but sadly cannot get it so i'm definitely gonna mention the Air to them

So am I correct in assuming the Two is more capable of running high end emulators than the Air? And if so is the difference projected to be significant?

Funny how everyone seem to copy Switch button layout nowadays when most people seem to hate it when they first revealed it.
