Well, my PC at my Dad's place is due for an upgrade (AM2+)

Approximate Purchase Date: Near Christmas, but I need a part list now to monitor prices. (Requirement of his)
Budget Range: 400-500, but making him stretch to 650$ is VERY likely.
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming on high 1080p
Are you buying a monitor: Nope.
Parts to Upgrade:Everything but the HDDs and ODDs.
Do you need to buy OS: Nope.
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Microcenter, Newegg, and any third one. (Can only order from three places, and I live near Microcenter)
Location: Houston, Texas, USA. (His home is far away from my Mom's.)

Parts Preferences: An i5 would be fine. No video editing on my vacations, so getting an 8350 at his place would be a waste. (Haswell, if possible)
Overclocking: Nope. Get me a locked processor/mobo.
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: 1080p

Additional Comments: A 750w+ PSU that is under 90$.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My PC there is a Phenom II 840 (Rebranded Athlon II) on an AM2+ board with DDR2 RAM and an HD 6570.

You know for budget gaming i3 or FX-6xxx can hold its stance very well.

But since you are not overclocking, pretty much any motherboard, excluding Intel branded motherboard, well work fine. You could definitely go with that MSI Z87-G41 motherboard.

My dad's rule for PCs: 2nd highest model.
For instance, I got an 8320 in my editing rig instead of an 8350. Since he's the financer, his rules. But the i5 looks pretty good. How would this be?

Not bad. GPU is very strong, 7870 XT is essentially a downclocked 7950. 7850 is sufficient for 1080p, so 7870 XT will most certainly get the job done.

I think the only custom hardware is to do with the SSD and a security chip

Didn't see much need for a console, all the advantages have kind of disappeared
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
the ps3 used to support installing linux because the cpu was so powerful
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Then the games are $70 and they want to reboot and refresh the same game every year
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
The ps3 was always Linux they just found a way to make it open source

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
At one point PC game pads where poorly supported, loading a game had setup, it was complicated. Now it's almost as easy as a console.

Xinput and 360 dongles were a driver nightmare
