Review Approach:

I was given the chance to play this game about 2 weeks before its release. It's my first review as part of the team, so I am very excited about sharing it with everybody.
The Swindle is a 2D steampunk themed stealth game where you break into buildings, steal their money, hack their systems, and then escape the police to make off with the dough.

Hey guys, Ericzander here and this is my first video game review as part of the GBAtemp team.  I'm going to be making my reviews in video format.  I have a method to how I judge games, which I list after the video.

I ranked the game based on the combined total of the following categories:
*Music* How memorable and great was the music?  --/10
*Story* Was it thrilling?  Cheesy?  Or non-existent?  --/15
*Level-Design*  Were the puzzles challenging without being frustrating?  Was the layout amazing or sub-par?  --/10
*Replay Value* Do you feel the urge to come back to play this later?  --/10
*Controls* Did the controls feel natural or clumsy?  --/15
*Graphics* Were you utterly blown away from the graphics or cringe while looking at the art?  --/5
*Appropriate Difficulty* NOTE that a high score does NOT equal a high difficulty.  If a game was too hard, then it receives a lower score than one that had an appropriate difficulty.  To get a perfect 10, the game needs to have just the right amount of difficulty.  --/10
*First Impression*  What was being conveyed at the start of the game?  --/10
*Immersion*  Was a tear shed?  Did you feel a personal connection to the story?  --/15
*Overall* Total score.  --/100

Please feel free to leave suggestions for how I can do reviews in the future!

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Wonderful music that really sets the tone of the game.
  • Impressive level designs that are never exactly the same from game to game.
  • A ton of replay value.
  • Very immersive. Every time you fail, it affects you.
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Controls can get sticky. It gets marginally better when using a controller.
  • Very sharp spike in difficulty early on as a losing streak can end up snowballing into making the game nearly impossible.
6
Gameplay
It is very fun to play once you get used to the controls and difficulty.
8
Presentation
Do you like steampunk? Cyberpunk? Stealth? Great music? This game has all of that!
10
Lasting Appeal
Even though the game can be hard, it's done in a way that makes you want to keep playing to get better. It is a great feeling to make it out of a level without being seen. It's a feeling that will make you want to keep coming back for more.
7.6
out of 10

Overall

The Swindle is a very fun game, and I would certainly recommend it at its small price point.

  1. The Turtles are back for their umpteenth game outing, but is this one worth it?

  2. Alone in the Dark is a Survival Horror game available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC.

  3. Step into post-apocalyptic Northern Finland in Rauniot, Act Normal Game’s debut point-and-click title. Let’s click away!

  4. Australia-based indie developer Drop Bear Bytes’ debut title, Broken Roads, launches today on PC and consoles. Does this new cRPG have what it takes to stand toe-to-toe to its contemporaries?

  5. Ereban: Shadow Legacy is Baby Robot Games’ debut title that merges classic stealth mechanics with a fast-paced ability to merge with shadows. Should you allow it to sneak into your PC gaming library?
