Always good to backup NAND. You can use gateway launcher to do that without a card. You can also downgrade the same way. I get my connectors on ebay.

im a bit iffy about using a gateway with no nand.bin file... so many had their shit bricked. unrelated but is there a clear replacement shell for old xl?

There hasn't been a gateway related brick for awhile now. You use the launcher to create the NAND.bin , then downgrade. I haven't seen a clear shell for the 3DS.
