I never got around upgrading my 3DS to the new one yet, I was thinking today I would possibly get one once Nintendo makes another handheld system but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I think the switch being a portable system gives the 3DS 5-6 years more of life. I can't see a reason to say after the usual 5 years or so years they would announce a successor to the 3DS since the switch is more powerful and a handheld system at the same time. If they do announce a successor to the 3DS, let's just call it a 4DS, than maybe I would get a new 3DS when it has that $79.99 price like the 2DS has right now. For me I don't see a point in getting one if I really don't care for the exclusive games. Some may say the N3DS can count as a successor to the old 3DS but I can't really say I count it, even though it's a bit more powerful.

Sure, if you're considering "life" to be how long you use it, but it'll only receive new games and support up to maybe the end of 2018. That's when its life cycle will be technically over. I'm not ruling out the possibility of a successor in the DS line, though, since it is portable-only, has the dual screens, and Switch ticks the home console box for Nintendo.

They'll keep selling them and supporting the eshop, but they'll stop making stuff for it. Check out the discontinued date for the NES and SNES. And I think they only stopped making/selling the original gameboys around the time of the gamecube.

I think the 3DS will be making games even after 2018, I don't want to count the wii too much because the only game that basically got was just dance after the wiiu came out. I would have to look into this one but when the PS3 came out, I believe PS2 continued to get games for a couple more years and I think the same will happen with the 3DS.

Precisely, it's always a couple years at most. Switch released early 2017, so end of 2018 or early 2019 3DS is likely to be retired. The game releases have already slowed to a trickle, Switch releases are probably coming quicker at this point.

More like 1-2 years or until the Switch truly blossoms. The 3DS can't possibly get anymore console modification releases unless the hardware would be revised more powerfully (which is stupid and dumb, and dumb and stupid) Even then Nintendo isn't keeping the Switch as it's portable successor since it's still heavily seen as a Home console that can go on the go. A "New Nintendo Switch" with more power and more portable console advertising could end a traditional portable line for Nintendo killing the DS brand which wouldn't be a bad thing.

The Famicom is the medal winner. It wasn't discontinued in Japan until 2003, more than 20 years after it launched. They were still providing service/repair on it until 2007. I bought an AV Famicom BNIB in Tokyo in 2013.

I do hope there's a replacement for the 3DS in the next 2 years though. The Switch is portable, but not that portable. It's not 'give it to your 7 year old' portable.

Well at least first party support will end in not so far future. But there's always continued support by third party. Think how long the original DS still got games after Nintendo dropped it. I think the last ds title published by Nintendo was pokemon bw2 in 2012. Big hero 6 was the last ds game in 2014. That's four years since the 3ds was released. So I wouldn't worry too much until a true 3ds handheld successor is announced.

If they bring some interesting games like a super mario odyssey spin off or a great zelda game, the 3ds will always be a most wanted handheld console

I think the biggest issue will be making games that are appealing to their audience in 2017 that can still run on the O3DS. The bottleneck is real and quite old at this point.

While other consoles have lasted longer, I appreciate how long Sony supports their legacy consoles.
"wait, what about the Vit-" Well no not that one
The PS2 was supported until 2013 and the PS3 is still being supported by Sony, but not as heavily as their PS4 platform. Now that I typed that up, I am unsure as to why I thought it would be a good idea... Nevermind I guess.

I think the continuation of the 3DS will depend on the Switch.

If the Switch is considered a success then I reckon they've already stopped first party support for new projects outside of anything small (e.g. the recent Pokemon re-release) and within two years stop manufacturing with it entering the 'kiddie shovelware' phase for any new software.

If the Switch is considered a failure, then we may see them extend support.

I'd say there is still a couple of years worth of life left in it, if not longer. Nintendo haven't long released their 2DS revisions of the 3DS and continue to release limited editions of the N3DS. The console is a good seller and Nintendo like the revenue. I think finishing a successful handheld just because it's at the end of it's lifespan would be a reckless move. I'd also say this is likely Nintendo's best handheld to date, the volume and variety of games for it is wonderful.

but we know it won't get any more pokemon games after usum due to limitations of the hardware these games already push the system to its limits so they can't make a new gen with out it looking the same on the 3ds.

Just because they're now releasing games that are 'New 3DS only', I would call the New 3ds / New 2ds the next wave. I'm betting they'll keep putting out games for, at the very least, 2-3 more years. Very least.
