Sonic Forces: Classic Sonic Gameplay Trailer

SEGA has put out a trailer for its upcoming modern Sonic game, Sonic Forces. This title is the 25th anniversary game for the Sonic franchise, despite releasing a year late. It appears to be a sequel to 2011's Sonic Generations, featuring both Classic and Modern Sonic. This specific trailer shows off Classic Sonic in a new rendition of Green Hill Zone. Sonic Forces is set to launch Holiday 2017, for Switch, PC, PS4, and XBO.

Well, it was to be expected, I guess. New Sonic game, everyone reacting with negativity, obligatory "I never liked the series, " now all we need now are 10 year olds defending the game in incoherent all-caps "sentences."

I'll be honest; the game could be a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse. At least Sega is sticking with something that worked the first time instead of pulling some weird ass mechanic out of their anuses and shoehorning it into the gameplay with as much grace as a drunken truck driver rushing to the bathroom in a fit of diarrhea.

That's basically my opinion of the matter, I didn't find this gameplay trailer bad, it looks okay to me. The camera could be closer really, it just seems like them trying to show how they 3D-HD'ed up Green Hill Zone. I don't remember Unleashed (on Wii at least) having the camera that far out. But yeah, I'm going to be all over Sonic Mania. Between that and possibly the upcoming Pokemon movie, it's going to be a nostalgia feels heavy 2017.

I wonder if this Green Hill will be only one ACT. Before turning fully into the sandy part, perhaps after finishing it you go to...

Sand Dune Zone.

I mean, it doesn't seem done. Seems to be a bit too early to complain. I wonder if other levels will take advantage of foreground and background for these classic stages.

Sure, but you don't see Super Mario Odyssey having half the game also a New Super Mario Bros game. Nintendo (smartly) keeps them as separate titles, so as to not take value away from the experience of playing either considerably different style.
I mean, it isn't like they don't do 2D levels in 3D, unless you are talking about art style.

Besides, I'm sure if Mario Generations was made, people would be happy to buy it.

And before anyone says anything, this is not what I meant.

Come on now, those Mario Galaxy games had maybe 5% playable at best in 2D (probably even less than that). Its not a glaring 50/50 split. Alright, lets look at it from the opposite perspective if you're going to scrutinize my main point. Can anyone imagine a New Super Mario Bros game that is also half in 3D Mario Odyssey style? That'd be a pretty blaring difference in play styles and truly wouldn't feel like they should be together on the same game half and half like that. And also pretty unwanted honestly. I play the 3D Mario games for their specific playstyle while I play the 2D games for their specific playstyle, Sonic is now living it back up with proper 2D games again, so why waste half of this new 3D game with 2D gameplay when we have a full 2D game coming this year (that frankly looks way better than the 2D portions of Sonic Forces).

It just an example that they haven't shy away from mixing styles. Funny, considering in this game they mixed realistic and non-realistic art styles. I wouldn't be surprise if there were 2d level in Mario Odyssey. Yes, it isn't a 50/50 split, but if they did a game like that, as long as the game is good, why does it matter?

Because why not? Just because one team is doing 2d Sonic levels, doesn't mean the other team can't or shouldn't.

Yeah, the 3DS is still a very capable system for 3D-esque Sonic games. Yoshi's Wooly World was very detailed, so I know they could pull off Sonic. They just need 3DS-specific optimizations.

Sonic Lost World on 3DS was proof of that and SEGA could have released already a proper Sonic Generations for it but nope. SEGA being SEGA.
