My friend gave me a (what I think is) a mod chipped wii, because he said it was physically modded to be able to play dvds, and I want to use to wii shop channel. The only problem is that the wii is on 4.2 and I need to get 4.3! Is it safe to update?
Any help is appreciated!

If I recall correctly even with an update that is impossible. Nintendo has shut down all forms of communication. Your only chance of a digital game or through uh rather ahem Yarrr Harr Harr ahem methods. Or backing up you physical games to digital but I can't say I always do that myself. :P

I think what could happens (what happened to a friend but I think it depends the chip?) is locking the region for pirates , but you could try to update via homebrew instead

It should be fine to update. If there were any soft mods on the console they might get removed but Letterbomb works on 4.3.

The Wii Shop channel isn't shut down, it's the Nintendo WiFi Connect service that handled multiplayer games, the mail system and the social channels is what they shut down.

Ok, so one other thing: I updated to 4.3 and it works fine, however my wii output cable is loose and so it might randomly turn off because of it being loose and unplugging. So I was going to install ios 236 and then it just so happened to un-plug when I selected the option to install from nus, but I didn't press a to install yet when it had turned off. My wii still turns on now and I managed to install ios 236 without my wii turning off (this time I pressed a to install it) and my wii seems to work fine. Should I be worried of any damages that I'm not aware of?
EDIT: That's not the problem for turning off, it was just overheating, not the power cable or whatever.

overheating and shutting down could be bad if you are in the process of installing/editing the system content, like IOS or cIOS install, wad install, console updating (thought, now it's done so you are fine), Even savegame writing from a game.
It could corrupt your file system, or even prevent the console from booting. it depends when that shutdown happens and what you were doing at that time.

If you installed all the softmod and don't need to touch the system content anymore, you are fine. the only issue you could encounter is in case the console shutdown while a game is writing its savegame. at best that savegame will be corrupted, at worst it could affect other files.
Maybe you could use USB Loaders setting to redirect all savegames to your external device, so instead of saving on the console it will use the SD or USB instead.

Do you ever use DVD on Wii too, or don't need any Disc form?
If you want to take advantage of the modchip, you might need system menu 4.1, as nintendo patched modchip region free in 4.2
But if you play all games from USB Loaders, then you don't have to worry about your system version. 4.3 is good for everything.
if you even intend to go back to 4.1, ask here first as it could be dangerous to install things manually without checking all your required files.
