Hi, I'm currently trying to install arm9loaderhax (part 3 of Plailect guide) on my old 3ds XL. I have finished all the prep work on section 1, and the problem happens right at the very beginning of section 2. If I load my 3ds with the SD card inserted, I just get an infinite double black screen that forces me to hold the power button to turn off. The 3ds loads just fine without the SD card, and checking my firmware, it is the 2.1.0 that it should be.

I have been extremely meticulous in following the guide, and it is frustrating and baffling to me to have such a seemingly small thing stop my progress. I will include a picture of my 3ds root in the hope that it will reveal the issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is normal. Just take out the SD card, turn on your system, put your SD card back in, then continue on with the guide.

I managed to get everything working with my old 3ds, but this is only a step in putting custom firmware and homebrew on my new 3ds without having to solder anything. Unfortunately, I am now at the exact same step at version 2.1.0, and I have a worse problem. I can boot with the SD card inserted and have the N3DS power on infinitely with blank screens. If I boot without the SD card, the power light turns on for a second and immediately shuts off. I cannot do anything. What should I do? I followed the instructions to the best of my knowledge.

if you hold down start while powering up with the microSD card inserted, does anything happen?

I found this thread with a guy that had a similar problem to mine. Should I do something with SysNAND or EmuNAND from Hourglass9? I'm afraid of doing irreparable damage, and I refuse to put a soldering iron on my 3DS.

*edit* nevermind, that guide doesn't have anything to help. you're on a New 3ds, yes?

Also, since you can reach Hourglass9, the worst case scenario is you restore your backed up nand, and then try again. but we're not there yet.

a few other questions:
-Do you have emunand?
-Have you used gateway?
-Any other details that would be relevant?

I don't think any of those situations even apply to me, since arm9loaderhax hasn't been installed yet, and I can't do anything outside of going into Hourglass9. The problem happened after http://dukesrg.github.io/2xrsa.html?arm11.bin just froze my system (worked on old 3dsXL) and I forced shut my 3ds.
I've had that happen before, but restarting it should have been okay...Just for giggles, have you tried holding select while starting to see if it was installed? Apparently even though it looks like it freezes after visiting dukesrg.github, it can still install by pressing select at the freezed screen. It's just the text isn't there or something.

Holding select boots up Luma3DS.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I forgot to mention, before I had my 3DS freeze, both of my screens were constantly warping to all types of crazy colors, and I was afraid that my screens were shot. That obviously is not the case, since Hourglass9 and Luma3DS menus seem to showing up flawlessly on both screens.

Holding select boots up Luma3DS.
Excellent! If you pop your microsd card into your computer, and see the otp.bin file in your /a9lh/ folder, then you're done with 2.1. Just start at section III - configuring Luma3ds and you're good to go. Not being able to boot after being able to get to luma3ds screen (by holding select at boot) is normal for New 3ds.

Unless I'm misunderstanding?

As a final quick question now that everything is done and finished, how do I get my game and save data back after this whole process? I backed it up before starting this whole process. I would rather not lose my Monster Hunter data. Would the JK save manager be the key?

If you restored the pre-a9lh NAND and use the same Nintendo 3DS folder as you had originally, your games and saves should reappear without issue.
You can restore the saves you backed up before as well, if you want.

I think that I may have shot myself in the foot with this one. I don't think any of my NAND backups are going to work. I did find this thread and I was wondering if it had any chance of working in my case.
