I was browsing ebay one day and I noticed a boxed 3DS for sale at £40. It was listed as "faulty" but according to the listing it said the only fault was the fact that they can't get rid of the parental lock but I still went ahead and bought it.

Arrived today in working order and as expected, the parental lock was removed within seconds after a few seconds of Googling. Kinda disappointed that it didn't have extra goodies like the Ambassador games or some digital games but I feel lucky to even score a working console this cheap.

Not sure if I should try and resell it or keep it myself to try the Gateway with it.

Wow, that's a great deal.

I buy and sell a fair amount of 3DS consoles but I don't often come across systems on firmware version 1.0.0. On the few occasions I've received them I updated them to 4.x.x and resold for profit, which is what I generally do for any console below 4.x.x. I did feel some guilt about it though when it came to the 1.0.0 consoles. There's just something special about a console on the very lowest possible firmware. I know it's silly, but it almost feels like a shame to me to update them.

I know its cool to own that "old" FW, but you ll have to update it to 4.1-4.5 for Gateway.
Also, you ll have backup of your sysNAND, just in case that FW version become valuable one day.

Why would 1.0 ever be worth more than 4.5 considering we already have full kernel access and the 3DS is already out of the box? It's an absolute waste of time to set up a hardware mod just to extract that mostly useless base firmware.

If I were you i'd do the SD mod and backup that firmware. You may never know how useful a buggy older firmware can be.

Do you think the low firmware is enough to ask for a higher price? I'm kinda aiming to sell this to go towards a Zelda edition 3DS but I'd be happy to keep this around for another year just in case something turns up for homebrew. To be honest, pretty much all the games I would've downloaded for the Gateway is already bought and in my collection.

IIRC the original firmware was horrible. They shipped the 3DS only half complete and it took a year or so for them to patch standard base content like the eShop in.

But since it was a fresh console with the earliest firmware it's probably easy as fudge to exploit for hacking purposes. If it's in good nick I would shelve it for now- a Mint launch 3DS with 1.0.0-0 might be worth crazy money one day.
