Blu ray licensing fees are still 4 times the price of DVDs. Microsoft isn't stupid. Bandwidth cost vs a second DL bluy ray disc. Unless they changed their plans, they are already having dedicated xbone servers for each halo games' multiplayer playlist of this collection. That's even more money they are spending. It's likely they figured out a hit in bandwidth fees was better then having to pay the blu ray foundation more money. Don't forget Sony's a key part of said foundation. Why would you want to give your competitor extra money when you don't have to? Plus it has already been shown when ever a halo comes out, xbox sales and gold subs get a big spike for 1-3 months. The gold subs and xbone sales may make up just enough of the bandwidth cost.

The 20GB is multiplayer content. If Xbox Live goes down, you won't be able to play multiplayer anyways.

But what does a "mandatoiry patch" mean? If it can't even start to download the patch, will it still run, so you can play it single-player? Or will it just refuse to run unless you are connected and downloading the patch, in which case the disk will be a coaster once Xbox Live is taken offline?

Chances are it'll just work, but without multiplayer until you download and install the patch.

360 used DVD-DLs which are dirt-cheap, One uses BluRay discs which cost quite a bit more. Multiply that for a few hundreds of thousands of copies and that additional disc quickly adds up to the cost :) There you go.

then explain God of War complete collection. 6 games, 4 discs in a steelbook and only 5 bucks more costly than normal price.
by your logic then they should up the price to the double at least.
and you have Metal Gear legacy collection too. 2 discs and came with an artbook too and was priced lower than full price.

If you ask me about the decision of leaving the online only content as an update I say that is ok as long as is only that what is cut from the disc. if you don't want the online multiplayer simply don't update. but on the other hand I also think that the solution wasn't optimal and a second disc should have been better.

You just named two Playstation Titles. Sony isn't going to charge themselves highly more for blu ray usage. Even if they have to pay the other blu ray alliance guys a fee, it isn't going to be as high a fee as they would charge outsiders.

business are business and if Sony need to pay fees to himself they will do. also count that the Playstation section is like a separated company.
and come on, 4 discs and a steelbook or 2 discs and an artbook need to cost way more than 2 discs and a normal bluray box even without taking account the fees.
also, I didn't know Sony had the right of the Metal Gear saga, I though was Konami.

I don't like day 1 patches for anything, but asking your customers to down a 20GB file for online.... Lets face it most Halo players love online PVP play. So for most of them that 20GB file is going to be mandatory.

Even on my connection that's still about 2 hours of a download, then if you happen to have a connection that has some sort of bandwidth limit. 20GB's for one game might be a bit rough.

I would say throw it on a 2nd disk and raise the price 5 bucks, still a fantastic deal your getting a lot of great games and all upgraded too. Besides with another 25GB's of space to play with, they could pack in some more content just to make the higher price even more worth it.

That's my 2 cents on the issue, that being said I doubt a 20GB download will stop Halo fans for very long.

Edit: Another thought crosses my mind, perhaps MS could have sold 2 editions, a "complete collectors edition" with some price premium with 2 disks, and the standard cheapo edition like it is now.

Sony is one of the biggest producers of BD-media out there (so they can get it from theirselves at COST), Microsoft isn't.

That should be enough :P

Seriously though... when is there gonna be a PC release? :(

The only reason for a XBONE would be Halo, otherwise a PS4 IMO.
And I don't want to buy either of them, I'll stick with the PC and Nintendo from now on.

And people complain about a hypothetical 1GB mandatory update for Mario Kart 8? (The DLC)

That's because Wii U's got a stinking low storage of either 8GB or 32GBs which is tough on some owners.

Seriously though... when is there gonna be a PC release?

Without Halo then Microsoft wouldn't have a good reason to keep Xbox around.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
