The original Famicom did have hard wired controllers, but also a 15-pin port on the front intended for the light gun (which looked like a Colt Single-Action Army revolver in Japan, not raygun style like the "Zapper"). But that port was soon utilized by 3rd party makers, with this being an example. The AV Famicom has NES-style detachable controllers but the 15-pin port was carried over for these peripherals.
Huh. I thought the Famicom didn't have removable controllers.
Famicom only, @Costello. Goes in the 15 pin accessory port on the original and the AV Famicom. As you can see, it has Turbo (yes!).
I'm gonna keep posting photos of retro-related doo-dads, but I'm doing it hoping others will join in.
