Piracy is on the rise, according to UK study

More people continue to turn to piracy, a trend that has been growing since 2020, according to piracy tracker MUSO. With the advent of more streaming services than ever, online media consumers are pirating dramatically more, especially when it comes to film and publishing. Piracy is on the rise in all categories, which include TV, film, publishing, music, and software, with an increase of 20% over last year. Film piracy is up by a whopping 47%, with publishing-related piracy up by almost 40%, while TV and software both went up by about 10% each. Piracy of music saw the lowest growth, of less than 5%, but an increase nonetheless.

MUSO measured a variety of statistics, comparing illegal streaming sites versus illegal download sites. Overall, 54% of all piracy-related traffic goes toward streaming sites, while the rest is to torrent and download sites. A whopping 95.1% of pirated TV content is streamed, rather than downloaded, while the split is more even when it comes to film or music. According to the numbers, over 60% of traffic is direct, and only 28% comes from Google, or other search engine results. Most piracy occurs in the United States which has a moderate lead over the rest of the world, with Russia, India, and China following behind.

Prior to 2020, piracy traffic did not have such large growths, and in the 2010s, even saw a decline in most countries.

People: monopolies bad. Fuck Microsoft.

Also people: NOOOOO WHY ARE YOU MAKING YOUR OWN STREAMING PLATFORM RATHER THAN LETTING NETFLIX OWN EVERYTHING THIS IS SHIT >:’(

To all the dumb fucks complaining about multiple platforms, let me ask you this:

- a person watches, on average, 10 movies a month (it’s true, look it up)
- let’s assume that you need 3 platforms to watch those
- the average cost of renting a digital movie is $4
- your monthly expense for 3 streaming platforms is $35 per month

Would you look at that, the price is still lower than what you would pay if you rent, which is something that has been around since Blockbuster came. And that’s not counting all the other shit you can watch for those $35 too.

You can argue all you want that you’d rather pirate and keep the money to other useful stuff like Doritos and Mountain Dew, but let’s not pretend that a few more streaming services are going to bankrupt you because it’s just bullshit.
i pirate to piss people like you off

People in the UK (not all) are having to make decisions if they should eat or heat the home this winter. Everything else like gaming, streaming, music services are luxuries that for many people will be achieved through piracy.

I'm certainly not condoning pirating the shit out of these companies but at the same time I can understand why people are doing it.

Until people can afford normal everyday things, utility bills, fuel for their cars then I really only see those Piracy rates increasing.

What did they expect?
With the shitty increment of streaming services adding up each day, one can only afford so much to watch X or Y shows, and for games getting indies up their asses it's the same deal.
Not that I care much about TV shows at all, most are shit focusing on anything but good scripts and characters, and in this day and age, no one should give any company any money unless they know what they are in for. I am not throwing money for a show I don't know if it's gonna be shit or not, if it isn't, then I watch it on the proper service, if not, then fuck off. And for gaming it is the same.

All in all, they get what they got coming for them.
It's not like the companies aren't making their billions in profits anyway, they can continue shoving shit up everyone's throats.

Sadly I'm not part of that statistic, I did most of my pirating before then and am just pulling what I want from my NAS.

But also, what the fuck did they think would happen? The reason people pirate is for convenience or because they can't afford something, and for most inflation is far higher than any potential pay rise.

Covid alone tripled the amount of piracy use since barely anybody goes to the Movies nowadays
Anyone with a brain either jailbroken their fire-stick or found a reliable streaming site that provides better selections of TV shows-Movies than a single subscription service.

You're salt slinging just to be salty. Nobody is pretending anything. The market of video streaming is over-saturated because businesses want more money. The initial premise was that it was more cost effective to get Netflix and Hulu and just "cut the cord" as it were. Now there's a multitude of services and platforms and the justifications are weak for their existence.

The cost stacks up. Sure, you can argue that you just cancel services for the months you don't need or want them. However, that can also be applied to cable/sattelite. Hurling insults doesn't change the fact that the media market is making it harder for the consumers just to get more profit.
