I've got an unpatched switch with a dead eMMC module. No back up. What's the best way to move forward? It boots into hekate and loads payloads just fine but will obviously not boot into stock os. Any advice? Am I supposed to buy a wiped eMMC and flash a "back up" (I think I can just download that somewhere on the internet) onto it?

Did you even look on the main page of gbatemp?

On the main page there are two tutorials about this issue

Read them and all your questions will be answered

https://gbatemp.net/threads/switch-unbricking-guide-for-dead-or-replaced-emmc-consoles.609891/

https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-fix-switch-with-bricked-emmc-without-working-rawnand.612011/

Is you don't have a backup (which is the VERY FIRST STEP of almost any guide) the only way to recover your console is following the guides. DO NOT OMIT READING the steps and post.

Thank you so much! In regards to the second link, I assume I need to buy a clean eMMC right? I can't just use a known working one from a donor switch right?

you can use any eMMC, as you will restore images to it. the problem is on the encryption of the partitions and files that's is why you need a backup o recreate from donor files.

Made some progress thanks to you :). I now boot to the 2 Nintendo logos but am then greeted by the 2002-4686 error, which I think is caused by mismatched firmware?

yes read all the tutorial, understand it if needed read again before try any step on your console.
Was able to get it working, thank you. Did the whole process a 2nd time and it worked. Now that that's done with, would you happen to know which files are safe to delete? The SD card storage is quite full.

normally you don´t delete directly any file on the NINTENDO nor emuMMC folders on the root of SD card.

inside the Switch folder there are the homebrew programs.

if you have NSP or XCI files on the SD card they can be copied to your computer and deleted from SD.

for free space from Nintendo and emuMMC folders you need to remove programs from the Switch HOS.
