I jailbroke my ps3 yesterday so I am still trying to learn what its capable of. Yesterday I spend all day learning how to mount game backups, everything seems fine so far. Today I decided to play a game I have a physical copy of Uncharted 1. Everything seemed fine until the second chapter, the HD keep doing a spin then stopping, over and over (the orange light was on the whole time) but then it would stop for a while and then come back for a few seconds (its never been this loud before I think). Anyways I thought maybe the spinning sound could be my ps3 fan having dynamic fan on, I installed Webman to turn it off but just before shutting it off I checked my temps, no idea what any of it means but the top one said 65C....then the fan started speeding up like crazy, faster and faster while on this menu, so I ran and shut off dynamic fan then it went back to normal.

Anyways as I was shutting off my ps3, I noticed there was a warning on the top right that said "Overheat Warning 75C" bear in mind I had been playing Uncharted for an hour or so ... is this like normal or did I mess up somewhere?

I'm no expert in PS3 modding, but I figure if you're getting an overheat warning you should probably keep the fan that cools the system turned on.

Do you mean re-enabling Dynamic Fan setting? I only turned it off cause of the random spinning sound, but the sound came back anyways...but like I said it come and goes so hard to tell what it could be.

That "random spinning sound" is the sound of your fan ramping up to keep the SoC of your console cool

Yes you should certainly turn the dynamic fan back on. Like @TotalInsanity4 says, that helps keep your system from overheating. A loud system is better than a dead system any day.
As for why your game is getting stuck spinning, I've no clue, sorry. :(

What is SoC? And are you saying its okay for it to be doing this? It was never this loud before CFW.
"System On Chip," which I guess in this case isn't technically correct because on a PS3 I believe it's just the CPU and GPU sharing silicone

Either way, though, don't disable it. Run some compressed air through the vents, or if you're feeling really adventurous take the whole thing apart and re-apply thermal compound between the heatsink and processor

Edit: As for the hard drive, I'm not sure what the symptoms are for a PS3, but it might be failing. See if you can get another one of equal or greater size and clone the one you currently have over to that one

I had this ps3 since 2008 or so... so the thermal paste thing kind of make sense, except like I mentioned... it was not making this sounds (as much) before CFW. I will try to do the compressed air tho.

Also, I am not sure the hardrive would be failing since I took it out of my ps4 soon after buying it when I decided to upgrade it, and formatted/installed it on this ps3 instead.

I have no idea what CFW related settings there are related to a PS3 since I don't own one, personally, so I guess I couldn't tell you if CFW would mess up fan speed settings. I would imagine that "dynamic" would be as close to stock as you could get, though, since the console defaults to ramping the fan up if things are getting toasty. If its really bothering you, maybe check to see if there's a way to raise the threshold for the fan kicking on to something like 70*C? 65*C is already pretty warm for something as low TDP as a PS3, though...

So I switched Dynamic Fan on this morning, the ps3 became way cooler, was getting like 45C on idle and obviously overheat warning is gone...

However the fan again became way louder, which you explained its just it trying to run faster to cool down the system better, I dont mind the louder fan if it will keep my system cooler/safer.. but will this kill my fans faster or it just uses more energy?

Running the fans at a higher RPM will degrade them faster than if they're running slowly, yes, but the damage to the fans is much less significant than the damage to the system die due to overheating. Besides, the fan will probably last as long as the system does. If not, then it's (most likely) replaceable

I see! 0_0 I guess ill let it as is for now... hopefully it will last until they figure out a way to softmod any version of the ps3. Is the best way to tell if you need to replace thermal compound if the temperatures are unnaturally high? Getting 45C on idle seems pretty decent to me atm

I'm not sure what a good target temperature is for a PS3, but 45*C at idle seems a little high, I'd expect to see something just north of 35*C if it was a laptop with a similar cooling solution. So yeah, if you feel comfortable cleaning off the thermal paste and replacing it, then I'd do that, along with blasting out any dust bunnies while you've got the console open. Other than that it might just be that the console is getting old and less efficient. Again, though, I don't know much about the specialized hardware the PS3 runs on

laptops can't get too hot, cause you know they literally sit on your lap, desktop hardware like consoles tend to get a lot hotter, imagine your phone being 35c

Laptops are "allowed" to get as hot as they need to under load, up to the point where the CPU throttles. I was basing my analysis on a high-performance laptop, though, since the blower-style cooling solution would be similar to the PS3's

One of the main benefits of cfw is the fan control so no need to freak out when it does its job. I think webman mod sets it to 68C by default so I assume anything in the 70s is considered bad.

First off repaste and dynamic fan control on with a max set of 65 and if it still goes over that a delid is needed

Plus rather burn out a fan wich you can easy replace then burn out the whole ps3 plus fans don't burn out that fast. I have been running fan control since the first day cfw got out in the 3.55 days and my ps3's are still running strong

What model of ps3 is it? If it's an original phat model, fully expect it will be ylod sooner rather than later I'm afraid.

Its a slim.... funny you mention YLOD, today I tried to play another original disc I own (its Uncharted 2), it got stuck in the spinning dagger which is apparently a common problem for everyone BUT when I restarted the system after it failed to load, I noticed my ps3 showed a yellow ligth for a few seconds :( Is this the infamous YLOD? Or it has something to do with CFW and I just never noticed? The system boots fine and I can play other games so idk if thats what it is
