Thing is, the switch is barely a portable imo. Sure, you can play in bed or at a friend's house, but no way I'd EVER bring that out in public. My 3DS fits nicely into my pockets and I can play it wherever I go. The switch, portability wise, just can't compare. That said, it's definitely a better console overall. After more games are released and it's hacked I'm sure I'll enjoy it a lot- but at the moment it just can't compare to my shacked 3DS.

Not to sound like a graphics junkie but the after playing with resolution and screen size of the Switch I don't think I can ever go back to playing on a 3DS albeit I never owned a 3DS to start off with...

Even when compared to the Wii U gamepad the Switch screen and resolution is a big step up, when compared to a 3DS (which is technically the power of a GameCube minus the resolution) we're talking 240p vs 720p with almost the same screen size screen (3DS XL vs Switch).

3DS is the better portable (fits nicely in my pockets, whereas the Switch I carry around by the handle of its case) and, until the Switch library grows, it's the better system also.

The Switch has absolutely nothing going for it.

The 3DS at least has 3D screens, dual screens, a unique OS, and an unmistakable design. You won't get that anywhere else, and that's why the 3DS is special.

The Switch is a tablet with two removable controllers, and that's literally it. Even the OS is barebones and minimalistic. It's almost completely text based!
The gimmick of the Switch is that you can play games on TV or on the portable, but they're JUST screens. Playing it either on the portable itself isn't any different than any other portable, and playing on TV isn't different than any other console. It is literally a device to play games. Nothing special about it. And yes, I was hyped as fuck for months for the Switch, but this is just the truth.
I'm waiting for a redesign for the console, I'll buy it day one. The current design just doesn't work. An (actual) gaming tablet with a bluetooth controller is more functional.

Furthermore, the Switch is a pain to carry around, the screen scratches easily and isn't protected by clamshell, amiibo functionality isn't as functional nor immersive as tapping it to the screen, (who thought tapping it to the right analog stick would work well...?) and what hope I still have in the OS is crushed by its many bugs and game crashes. Even the 3DS was more functional at launch. I haven't ever had a game crash without the assistance of hacks on 3DS, and that's since launch. For Switch, it's nearing 6 crashes and I only had it a month.

In fact, it isn't just crashes that make the Switch feel like a glorified tablet. There is video stream hiccups, a minimum required charge if the Switch battery reaches zero (you can't just plug it in and keep playing), the entire basis of Sleep Mode is the exact same as on a tablet (and you don't get StreetPass functionality either).

The 3DS will always be the better console unless the Switch gets a physical redesign.

uh it's called super smash bros. for nintendo 3ds, pal!
SSB is one of those games I truly can't play on a 3DS. Tried and failed. It's almost blasphemy since the Wii U version is x times more playable and watchable. Then again I might be slightly more demanding than the regular kid
Then again my guess will be that the Switch version will make us forget about all the past SSB ever. Cheers on that.

On one hand, the 3DS has been out for a while now, it has a great number of good games. Switch on the other hand, does not have that many games yet. So, it's hard to compare.
But, if we're comparing the technical specs then the Switch wins hands down. As for a number of good and fun games, the 3DS wins.
We'll just have to wait and see until the game library of the Switch gets populated then perhaps we can compare.
Both wins for portability.

Even though there is way more to play on the 3ds the switch has way way more potential. I can't wait until the switch starts rolling in the games.
nintendo consoles have always had potential, but always lacks it.

the switch so far is a dead tablet clone, nothing to play, nothing interesting and new coming soon or in the works.

now i know the 3ds continues the same ole nintendo traite and is littered with shovelware crap aimed at kids, but the few games it has and in 3d will make the console better in my eyes.

MK8D. PPT. SMO. Splatoon. There are good games in the works. And even more will be announced. I'll probably still prefer the 3DS, but if you're not into 1st party Nintendo games, you should NOT be getting Nintendo consoles.

For me, it's gotta be the 3DS.

I've owned 2 of these bad boys for almost 3 years. They're great for traveling/public places and the battery life is good (well, at least for my standards). But that answer might change if a) someone can tell me whether or not it's possible to transfer saves onto The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ for switch from a pc b) the switch has a game library I'd like.

I just realized I'm very biased towards the 3DS

I love the switch for the system, but I prefer the 3ds becuase of homebrew basically. If the switch ever gets to the level of 3ds or even Wii u for all I care in terms of hacking, I would prefer it. But until then 3ds for the win

The 3ds is more comfortable to carry around, however I haven't used my 3ds since I got my Switch. The main difference for me is how you travel, public transport and no backpack = 3ds, car and backpack = both :P

You can't exactly tap to the screen when it's docked, having it in the controllers is honestly the perfect solution. Even if you wanted to argue the grip should have it in the center, not having to use the grip is an advertised feature.

The grip has nothing electronic inside, the lights are just passthrough mirrors for the original Joy-Con lights.

To put the sensor on the analog stick is still a bad design choice.
It still doesn't function well, but at least it's still there. It would have actually worked if they put the sensor in the free space below the analog.

There's no free space below the analog, there's a linear resonant actuator and an IR camera, lol. The Joy-Con are packed full.
