I understand but it still makes no sense.
Have you seen what happen to the 3ds.
The first firmware wasnt useable for hacking to the end user.
Basically meaning by the time you get and sd card your have to update anyway to hack the system.

Ans other then putting one in the system it wont happen.
I dont even think the update is downloaded i think its part of the day one update and is just loaded and install from once a card is put in.

I havent seen any one with 1.0 and sd card.

Get the update now reduces the risk of accidentally updating past 2.0 when they get an SD card in the future I think I understand the ops question

This is likely their reason, updating to support sdxc without getting past 2.0 in case people get somewhere with homebrew.

At the same time, 2.1 was the GOLDEN firmware for a 3ds (when OTP was found vulnerable here) after a lot of stuff like the first Gateway batch on 4.x for the user end stuff, so... If you plan on hacking something staying the lowest you can while still having the main update features (like the 2.0 update) is their best bet.

PS4's golden and only publicly vulnerable FIRMWARE is 1.76.

So to speak...

well, if you wait to long on 2.0 and an exploit or something gets found on 3.2 or whatever, but the most recent update is 5.1, how wil you upgrade to 3.2? are there stil card updates?

I would buy one of those very cheap fake MicroSDs from ebay that are spoofed to 64GB,128GB, 1TB (LOL) and it should prompt for an update since the Switch won't know the difference.

Obviously do not use it for anything other than the update or to save screenshots to.

Yea but at the same time you have to look st the updating system.
With sony you can sideload updates so simply downloading and waiting for the right one works.
Vs the 3ds where it was sever base and you have to find a game that had that update on it in order to only upgrade to that firmware.

So if your switch is on 2.0 and they find a hole in 2.1, but nintendo servers have the newest update 2.3 on it.
You cant possibly upgrade to 2.1 unless its on a game cart.

And with the way nintendo is actting im willing to bet the updates will be done differently.
And they already said they will do force updates to play online.
So unless the system can be hack on a current firmware that can spoof an updated firmware. Its going to be a big game of cat and mouse.

Which will would back to either getting 2 systems (one for hacking and one for playing) Or
1 system and picking which you wanna do.

@xtheman166, you can, actually. Just format any micro SD (for example, I used a 4GB SDHC card) to exFAT and the Switch will prompt you to download the update. It checks for your card being exFAT rather than FAT32, and not SDHC vs. SDXC. I did the opposite test as well (before accepting the exFAT update), inserting a FAT32-formatted 64GB SDXC card and it did not prompt me to update.

update to 2.0 and you'll automatically get the card support installed as well as the eshop. just connect to the net or trigger the update manually in the system menu.

That's not quite true. I was on 2.0.0 when inserting my exFAT-formatted SDHC card and it still prompted me to get the "SDXC" (it's more like an exFAT update) update.

I can see one other reason for wanting that update now before the card is purchased being the amount of updates that will no doubt be along soon™ which could have the potential to close current browser holes

So, when new updates come along he may not have the option to pick and choose
I thought I was the only one that thought of this reason.

Shame on the rest of you for not seeing this through.

I own a 64GB microSD but its full of stuff. For the purposes of receiving the update does the card need to be formatted or is it simply detected and thats enough?

The Switch will accept both SDHC and SDXC formatted to either filesystem just fine. It doesn't seem to care either way.

Edit: Oh, I misread. If your 64GB is already formatted as exFAT that's enough to prompt the update, no need to clear the data. If it's on FAT32, then it won't ask you to update. Sorry.
