I don't know if I would choose to phrase it that way -- controls are pretty fundamental to a game, almost all of them.

It seems not far off a phrase like "It was really tasty except for it was poison".

With games like Meme Run clearly Nintendo does not have a high bar for games on the the eshop. By having mobile only games (potentially thousands) does this move the perception of the device as to "A handheld that can also connect to a TV" for the one seemingly fiercely defended by many here as a "Console you can take on the go"?

Options and innovation are good, but so is brand perception and messaging. So far Nintendo has been very good with staying on message.

wow great! the fact that they dont force devs to implement button/thumb-stick control for the games will make more devs develop games for the switch! I would've hate it if they force a control scheme on a game it wasnt designed for... I dont think it will open the way for free to play and shit, I dont see any connection between touch control and the bad shape of the mobile gaming market, but I dont want it to happen. still I was wondering about it since I saw the switch stand, and they chose the better option because in my opinion the alternative is making some stupid control that resembles touch (like wii?) that Im not a fan of or forcing buttons into games that dont need them...

"That opens it up the all the Candy Crush's and Mobile Strikes of the mobile gaming world. Are pay to win and micro transactions in the Switch's future?"
Is this really a "this, therefore that" type situation? Microtransaction bollocks of the current form (I remember arcades) seemed perfectly at home on the 3ds and I could see the same happening on any network enabled system, and probably a few offline ones as well. There is nothing inherent to touchscreen input that makes it more amenable to such charging models, there is also nothing inherent to buttons that renders them more resistant.
Frankly after the stagnation of the 3ds I actually kind of welcome something from that world. No chance I will ever pay for such a thing of course but if it forces someone to approach things a bit differently I am down. Likewise I like the rolling release model of some mobile games.

Could a developer choose to produce a TV mode only game?
I don't know what the regs are (they can be fairly odd and quite specific, some of the best I think being ones I read of Sony's once where there was a time limit by which time you had to have a press start screen) but I can imagine there will be offerings that might only have a token handheld mode that barely functions.
what regs are you talking about?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I dont think there will be tv-mode-only games, because there are no controls that are exclusive to this mode and the only limiting factor of the non-docked mode is the cpu/gpu that according to some run slower when undocked (?) but still, in this mode the screen is 720p so less processing is needed...

Everything I've read is that the controls merely took time to get used to but were great after you became familiar with them.
A game should not be a homework where you "get used to it," Nintendo ruined what could have been one of the best Star Fox games out there with their obsession forcing gimmicks. Besides, "get used to it" you also need to readjust the camera since it'd go out of control.

Well i wouldn't be surprised if the switch run on a custom android OS
if that's the case, we could install the play store once hacked
plus a linux terminal on the handheld could be handy ^^

Maybe shooters never should have moved to dual-analog controls, then, because that certainly took time to get used to. Hell, let's just never do anything new that our brains have to adjust to and instead just make games all the same so we don't have to adjust to doing things different purely for the sake of not having to get used to something new. Fuck brain plasticity.

Well, there can certainly be games that need the unlocked GPU/GPU performance that portable mode cannot offer. Reducing to 720p doesn't take into account that supposedly in portable mode, the CPU frequency also drops.

I would. Android is Linux-based. Linux has the GNU license which requires all modifications to be open-sourced. Therefore, if the Switch used Android, Nintendo's changes would be freely available and we sure as hell would know about it.

I am totally fine with portable mode only game (aka touch screen games).
I just won't buy them if they happen to be shit.
In the other hand I hope that nothing as a "tv only" game ever exists.

The motion controls were broken and not in the least enjoyable. You're here damage controlling just makes it look so cringey.

Star Fox Zero sucked due to the terrible controls.

the only things I could think of are the AAA games with the extreme graphics. but in this case cant they just reduce the amount of polygons and reduce the level of detail in portable mode and enable it?

Sucked for you. I read plenty of reviews that stated otherwise. You stating your opinion as fact is even more "cringey".

You read. READ. You didn't actually play it so you have no right to be defending it.

a great game is one that has intuitive controls so you can enjoy your time solving puzzles/adventuring/ whatever instead of having to waste your time to understand the controls of.

Look at the TV, now look at the GamePad, now look at... fuck! The controls are malfunctioning? You'll just have to get used to it!
