I have a couple of questions regarding flashcart choices:
  • I recently purchased a n3DS XL. When I started it, it has firmware 9.0.0-20U.
  • I also have an older 3DS. It has firmware 9.4.0-21U.
My questions are as follows:
  • When I initially bought the n3DS, I didn't expect it's firmware to be this low. I was planning on getting a couple of sky3DS Blue carts for both the systems. However, since the n3DS is at 9.0.0 firmware, would buying a Gateway 3DS work for it?
  • Would the Gateway 3DS work out of the box on the n3DS without having to do any additional work? The wiki is having me believe that I'll need to do some extra work to get it set up, which will be impossible given my two systems.
  • Are there any disadvantages to the Gateway that make the sky3DS a better choice?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, Gateway will work on the N3DS.

The Gateway will not work out of the box, you will need either a copy of Cubic Ninja (doesn't require anything else) or Ocarina of Time (requires a save dongle or another 3DS which can already run a Gateway). However, you only need one of these games once to set up the mset exploit, after that as long as you don't wipe the exploit you're good to go.

The only significant disadvantage of the Gateway is that you must launch an exploit everytime you want to use it. However, this is only a slight hindrance and with the release of the mset exploit for the N3DS it's almost negligible.

An alternative is to just get a copy of Cubic Ninja and use Pasta CFW. That way you don't need to buy a flashcard at all. If you want the features a flashcard offer though, Gateway is definitely the better choice.

I might just get a Gateway with Cubic Ninja then, since I might need a cart to use it's private header for online play anyhow.

If you want to be able to play on both systems, you could get a Sky3DS AND a Gateway. You can use the Sky3DS to hold a Cubic Ninja rom and set up Gateway for your N3DS, and later use it on the o3DS to play roms.

Nearly everybody has worked out that Cubic Ninja is worth something, and it costs almost as much as a flashcart anyway. So you may as well get the Sky3DS instead.

Also Gateway is way better than Sky3DS, you would only ever choose Sky over Gateway if you had no choice (if you didn't own a compatible console).

If you only want to buy one card, you can find people you can ship to who will set up the exploit for you for a small amount (less than the cost of CN/Sky)

Ah, I was under the assumption that you can't use a ROM copy of Cubic Ninja on a Sky3DS to set up the Gateway. Since I'll be using both 3DS systems, I'll just go get both and use the Sky to set up my Gateway then.

You can't use a rom on your own system since you need to be in Gateway mode before you can launch unsigned CIAs - but Sky3DS pretends to be a real cartridge. As far as your 3DS is concerned, there's a copy of CN in the slot. For any application that requires a cartridge you can use Sky :-)
